Autism

I’m worried about my daughter’s speech and communication development, or lack thereof.

I’ve been meaning to look up signs of Autism for ages, I think I was worried what I would find so I have been delaying it.

Anyway, after reading some things, I think I had better take her to the doctor and get her diagnosed by a professional. She certainly has some indicators.

She doesn’t respond to her own name. She doesn’t point at things. She has never said more than “Dada” “Mama” and “Ta” (ta is like saying thank you). Now she just says Dada and “baba” for mama. She doesn’t try to communicate what she wants, she just cries or screeches. She often acts like she is in her own world. We were worried she was deaf, but it’s clear she’s not, she just doesn’t respond sometimes. She’s 19 months old.

Sigh. I’m human enough I just want my daughter happy and healthy. I hope this is just slight developmental delay, but I’m sick about it.

Anyway, will do what needs to be done!

it sounds like a developmental delay to me. i had 2 preemies evaluated and they both had delays. early intervention got involved and they both started going to special schools to help them. they can also find you speech therapy and any other therapies out there that your little one will need. call EI and see if you can get your daughter evaluated. since my 2 were born early, we had a home health care nurse come every month and she tested them and found their issues early. yours is 19 months, which is pretty early still, so look into EI and see what they can help you with. no reason to be ashamed or blame yourself. for a while i blamed myself and felt ashamed, but then i realized that i just want the best for them. and want them to be functioning members of society. so it’s ok to get things looked into! 🙂

My cousin was like that, but everything turned out fine. He didn’t really speak until he was almost three. Its still a little hard to understand him sometimes, but he is making process. Speech therapy helped a lot.

I think it’s good to get her checked out just in case. There’s plenty of help out there for whatever it is. *big hug* You’ll make through this! 🙂

You should probably take her. I put it off and put it off with my son and now I really wish I had taken him to see someone sooner. He doesn’t have autism, but he does have some sensory issues that keep him from forming speech. There are a lot of reasons that your daughter might not be talking yet, the best way to find out is to take her to someone who can evaluate her and give you options on what

Oh goodness. Well hey, hopefully the doctor can figure something out, and whatever is ‘wrong’ with your daughter won’t change the fact that she is your baby girl. 🙂 All you can do is figure out the best way to make her life easier, especially in the area of communication. x
