Phew! The holidays are over. This includes TG, Xmas, BD, and NYE. This particular year I felt something strikingly missing from all the great meals, prepared with such effort and planning, that I’ve shared with a number of families…….

Prayer.

There was something incredibly awkward about diving into these feasts without some signal, like a “ready, set, go!” or even a starter’s pistol. Have we turned our backs to our Christian heritage too much? God knows how much I’ve hated (for decades) bowing down, folding my hands, and listening to our energy being misdirected to the church and/or people/entities from the past.

We have lost that spiritual commodity called “intent”. These meals, which used to be of such importance, no longer hold any unified purpose or goal among the participants. In other words, we have forgotten how to eat. We’ve forgotten and lost how much power our combined thoughts have in making a fabulous feast something really special. Nothing is being manifested. I’m not saying that we should be literally turning our food into the blood and bones of Jesus, but spiritually there should be some kind of prayer that empowers those who have gathered around the table and makes our food even more healthy on our behalf.

One day the right prayer will pour out of me. Maybe when I’m older. Maybe when I’m the oldest.

Enough on that thought. Right now, lets go back to the day after Christmas. We’re at the sheep station deep in the outback.

The grandkids are playing on the veranda.

Mountains (albeit small to an American) loom in the background.

We’re all stuffed from eating leftovers squeezed into our already bulging stomachs. It’s cool enough to take the four wheeler out for a drive…

…to check on some water tanks/windmills.

Pack the gun in case we see any dingos.

Load the dogs in the back.

Race the kangaroos

Outrun the sheep.

Check a few tanks

Then return to visit some more…

You have a point about grace. I will do some thinking about how to integrate gratitude into agnosticism. Thank you for the pictures. The soil is so red, the space so grand. I love the veranda – a place for sundowners.

ryn: children can be downright hurtful. I understand the struggle they create for us parents. Life can be so darn complicated with them, I wonder if they will notice that nothing came for them. I do not give to my daughter now. xx

Where is it written you can’t create your own prayer? With hands framing plate and visualizing Light pouring into food: “I bless and energize this sacred food for the nourishment, healing and energizing of my body, for my vibrant good health and the delight of my taste buds…thank you, thank you, thank you…I love you.”

Wow, you’ve really got into the outback thing thre haven’t you? And such lovely red dirt. I too agree about Christmas. Here it seems that most of us would rather avoid it, and everyone usually heads off as soon as is decently possible. We do little in the way of presents now, which suits nicely, but there seems to be no other real reason for the gathering, to some extent, of people who’d rather not see each other. Quite mad. I’d really like to bring back some of the ‘spirit’, some caring sharing and doing for others a bit.
