I used to wear baggy jeans
And my high school adviser thought I was stupid
Even before she pulled out my transcript
I’ve never thought about what I’d want to change
About the world, and the way it looks at me

 I did get mugged one time

 14 or 15, in broad daylight, right after school
I decided to walk down a different street for the first time
(Don’t do that anymore)
A group of 7 guys on a corner. “Tell him to empty his pockets”
“What?” never mind this, walking away
“Yo get em! Get em!” And he came after me
Knocked down, and further down the street, another 6 guys, watching
A gun in his waist, “Man, just empty your pockets.”
He just snatched the money without even lookin’ at it

 
As soon as he saw green paper…
It was $2. Two dollars! Is all he got from me
I had my ring, worth $100, earrings worth another $200-$300
And a gold chain around my neck
I was thinking about that after…
He’s stupid, Come on now, did you not see that? Did you not?
It’s not just cuz they were Black, they could have been Hispanic or White,
It didn’t matter, it doesn’t matter
It’s the clothes you wear and the attitude you bring that defines you
Cuz anyone can do that to you…
People call them gangs, but they think of themselves as organizations
