Hundred-Forty-Eight: Back in the Past

Entry For NOJOMO #27

Told from Kaden’s POV

“How do you know that man anyhow?” Harry asked glaring at me.

“Well….It was the mid thirteen century. Zeke and I were born in the outskirts of Norway. Our family moved to England when we were very young. Instantly, they noticed our magic talent was excelling most of the children our age. They wanted us to be involved in all the community activities. They were so proud of us. Most were half-bloods themselves, but they both admitted to not having talent like that at our young age.

The whole community made us mini-celebrities. We attended all the big wizard events. By the time I was 14, everyone knew my name. They thought we’d be the next prodigy. Mother wanted us to go back to Norway to polish our talent out of the public eye. She feared that other young wizard and witches would copy us, so we were sent in seclusion.

While we were away, we learned to live out on our own. I’ll never really know if mother and father made the right decision or not; leaving us on our own at a young age. I don’t know what they were trying to achieve, or if we even made them proud.

While in Norway, Zeke contracted a disease that was killing the nation. It was known as the “Black Death.” We came back to England to seek refuge with the family. I was ready to say my goodbyes, but once we made it back home, a strange man was living with them. He had them so brainwashed that they thought we could save the world, and give them fame and fortune. We were known as the Shadow Brothers.

The Black Death was slowly taking its toll on Zeke. He was developing buboes in his neck and legs. He began to keep a fever and vomiting blood. We didn’t know what else to do. As he lay on his death bed, Darkous gave my parents an ultimatum: turn us into vampires and let him be the teacher or he would slaughter our whole family. They didn’t even think about it. Wanting Zeke to be okay, I offered myself to him if he left Zeke alone.

I was under Darkous spell for months. Zeke was fading fast and steady. I thought for sure I was going to lose him one night, but I didn’t. While I was going to London to retrieve antibiotics for Zeke, mother and father gave him permission to be bitten. Instanteously, he was cured of his human disease but now we both were vampires.

Darkous taught us how to control our fire powers, how to run at high-speed, and even how to bite humans and feast on their blood. We were killing other people of the “Black Death” whom we thought wouldn’t survive anyhow. We were giving them a second chance at life, we thought. Darkous wanted to create a vampire army to take over the world while he be head of the pack. When most of the “Black Plague” victims were now transformed, Darkous wanted to move on to healthy people of the world – starting with our parents. He felt they were binding us to human hearts.

We couldn’t do it. We realized how heartless we had become (no pun intended). Zeke and I ran away to France, away from Darkous. We were different from most wizards. We had our magic powers and our vampire powers. While in France, we learned to live off animals and eventually, human food. It wasn’t an easy task but we managed to do so gracefully. Life was in balance once again. I wanted to move on after France but Zeke didn’t.

Centuries later, we’re here now. The rest of the details aren’t important.”

So they seem to have a colorful background. I guess they had to be since they are vampires something had to happen. Hopefully you don’t get attacked from sharing tales though. Hopefully it will be safe for the lot of you. The halls seem rather empty these days. Strange feel, strange feel indeed.
