Well, there goes the neighborhood…
But I remain optimistic about the Risorgimento (Italian, literally “Rising Again”) of OD. While many of the Old Guard remain missing, the inevitable influx of new diarists is sure to bring some fascinating/disturbing, but otherwise entertaining personae to our attention. We can only wait to see what their entries are like as they get the feel of a new social media platform.
Perhaps OD won’t be what it was. What is? But I am excited to see what it will become.
One thing that will be interesting to see is the Millennials who will end up on here. A friend shared a video of a Millennial Job Interview, and she said that while it is a parody, it is painfully closer to the truth than we can imagine. This coming from someone who interviews close to 1,000 people a year for a Fortune 50!
While not exactly social media, there is an app called Vivino (https://www.vivino.com/) that I found to be one of the rare worthwhile uses of technology. As we travel and sample wines, it lets us snap a photo of the label, and make notes as to where we enjoyed it, what we paid, etc. It also provides some notes about the vintage, with suggested pairings, where to buy, and other producer links. There is a “social media” aspect to it, in that oenophiles can follow each other, like reviews, and view other cellars. For me, it was a boon, as I would be too busy having a wonderful time and forget the details of the wine we had enjoyed.
And wouldn’t it be nice if diaries could be given a badge or other designation so we would know who are the returning vs. the new diarists?
I love the video. I have a millennial daughter, who, fortunately, does not fit this stereotype. She has hustled big time to keep herself afloat, setting up her own LLC and getting clients for her business to pay her the big bucks. She worked as a contractor for about nine months, and when the contract was us, the company realized they couldn’t get along without her, and hired her. For big bucks.
I like to think I set an example for her. I raised her as a single mother, and things got tight with too much regularity. She watched my struggles and learned that the way to get someplace is to work hard.
Had she ever acted like the girl in that video (and I know people like that are out there), big trouble would have ensued, and quickly.

The badge is a great idea. I’m anxious to see how many of the old “friends” show up. I’m glad that they will be monitoring for troublemakers, etc.

Ah some kind of designation would be a great thing.
