Stuff, internet and otherwise…. Edit –

  • Here is a link to a photo site:   Panoramio

This goes to the front page – and this morning the front page was showing photos of the space shuttle.  Surprisingly wonderful to watch.

Edit – just tested first link =- it’s random to photos connected to geographic areas.  There is a search window at top where you can put in cape canaveral and get the space shuttle pics.  Still a fascinating site.  Old and new pics hooked up to Googe Maps.

Old business –

  • The hair dye thing came from boredom at my old new job.  Or my new job – whichever you prefer.  I was catching sheets and trying to think of things to do to change my life.  Coloring my hair with temporary color at the beginning of each month  – a different color each month – seemed like an interesting idea.

I have not colored my hair since I was in my very early 40s.  I colored it a few times with temporary color – I used to know the name – and it would wash out after a few weeks and be gray again.  I’d try it again but I never did it often enough for it to be  effective.  Then once I tried permanent color and immediately regretted it – I didn’t like color or the texture of my hair.  So I let it grow out and never tried it again.

But back in early November it seemed like it might be fun, ‘fun’ or maybe even FUN to just surprise everyone with a different color a month that would gradually wear away until the beginning of the next month when it would be a different color.  I wasn’t thinking of anything terribly extreme.  Not black or blonde but various shades of brown or muted red or dark blonde.  i thought it would make me more of an entertaining person.  I just wanted to do it once a month for a year and then I would go back to whatever shade of gray/white I am.

Then I lost my old new job or my new old job, and since then I’ve had a fair amount of variety in my life without coloring my hair a different color every month.  i never got around to shopping for the color and I let it go.  The question of whether I would have gone through with it is up for discussion.  Maybe.  Maybe not.  Right now I have something a little odd going on in one of my ears and I don’t think adding a chemical cocktail to it would help

So I guess unless I am really desperate for novelty, I won’t be dying my hair.

You know that.   You knew it all along.

  • Quaker Old-Fashioned Oats – from the tall red and blue cylindrical box with William Penn’s smiling face on the front.  I used to save the empty boxes for Will to play with.

For some reason I like golden raisins more than dark ones.  They seem to have less taste.  They cost more.  They might have less vitamins since they are light colored.  Anyway I like them better.

The bowl comes from the garage sale of a woman I worked with at the old new job.  It is part of a set of two bowls and two plates.  I like the size of the bowls and the plates – bowls are big and plates are small.  I used the plates for the kids and the bowls for oatmeal and veggies, etc.  They are nice beige-y stoneware and they came from China.

The pan is a copper bottom, possibly Revere-ware, sauce pan that my brother’s wife gave me many years ago.  She had an extra one.  I always bought cheap sets of teflon lined pans and used them till they were used up.  I gave her a set and she gave me this one.  I guess I came out ahead
.
The stove is the 18" wide apartment size gas range that my husband brought home from a remodeling project in town.  He had installed new ranges and several of these were being given away.  I love my little gas stove.    It was clean when it came home, less so now.

I had been making oatmeal in the mircowave.  Five minutes in a tall glass bowl – the smaller mixer bowl that I had left from the mixer that no longer works.  Five minutes on high uncovered.  The microwave died last summer and for some reason has not been replaced.  So I make oatmeal on top of the stove.  I should time it but I’m pretty sure it’s done in less than five minutes.

You’ve reminded me that I’m out of Quaker Old Fashioned. 🙂 ryn: I’ve cut all the sugar out. Nothing in the house even remotely resembling sugar. That Quaker Oats factory is classic. I’ve got all my mom’s copper-clad RevereWare. Nothing is better!

I hope you won’t ever colour your hair. You’re one of the few people I know who looks great with natural silvery grey hair. If you really want a change, have it cut really short…you’ll look terrific.

RYN: I’d love to come to your town—if I knew what town it is. I love museums–of almost any kind. Hubby likes train and airplane and car museums, but you probably already knew that. We ARE headed to Minnesota later this year – probably about late August or mid-September, so if you tell me what town, we might be able to come that way. We did go to Winterset/Madison County back in 2003 when we went up for a family wedding – are you near there?

have you considered using Henna in your hair rather than a dye? its healthier and you can select the strength you want it by timing……it lasts a while too. I was listening to an interesting interview during the night ( couldn’t sleep) with Pres Obama’s spiritual advisor…it was very interesting. hugs as always p

Microwaves kill off the emzyines in food. I dont use mine much any more.

The hair coloring idea does sound like fun. I like steel cut oats, though they are a bit tricky to cook. I bring them to a boil and then cover and take off the heat, then bring back to boil in a while and let set again … eventually they are cooked. Trader Joe’s has a mix of different kinds or raisins, very tasty!

Oh do fix the mixer. 🙂

Lately I’ve been thinking of doing an occasional purple stripe in my hair. Sometimes chartreuse. I believe it was a very old woman in those New York City photos who inspired me. Her hair matched her outfit. Feel about it like I did when all the teen-agers were wearing glitter on their cheeks and so did I. Now that I look ancient I will stop pretending to be pretty. / I loved that “W” list onyour homepage. / If I were near you I’d have to cuff you upside the head for saying you’re unlovable though. / That’s exactly the oatmeal I eat with walnuts and blueberries and a banana mostly. Hot food is getting me through the Vortexes. / HAPPY DAY OFF TOMORROW! I saw it on TV.

I used to color my hair purple! It would last no more than 2 weeks – I figured it was far too expensive for such a short time. I loved it though… strangers would stop me on the street to tell me it was perfect for me. I went “red” – somewhere between chestnut and auburn – about 3 years ago. It took a while to get used to, but I get tons of compliments. I love old fashioned oatmeal…
