NoJoMo #25: Do you have any strange fears?
A: Sedatephobia – Fear of silence. After my 13 month tour in Iraq in 2007, when I came back I didn’t sleep very well. I felt very anxious in quiet environments. Very jumpy. Leapt 10 feet up at the sound of a mouse fart.
To me, absolute silence was as if the whole world was just holding it’s breath right before the shit hits the fan. It kept me frightened and on edge.
It’s gotten better over the years, but I still can’t sleep in silence. I tend to have nightmares when I do (assuming I can even fall asleep). For awhile I kept a knife and light at the side of my bed.
Now I just use a white noise generator. And I talk to myself when I’m alone. And all is well now.
I made another C++ video tutorial. This one is #3.
