the dreaded dentist

This was one of the worst weekends ever. I was up all night with mouth pain, my gums throbbing and bawling my eyes out… I can’t believe how much my teeth hurt, its insane! I can’t breathe or talk to eat or drink and nothing that I tried… oragel or anbesol helped at all. It was just insane. Last night I got about 3 hours of sleep all together… if even that. Its been awful.

Molly told me about her dentist so this morning I called about 10min after they opened. Luckily I was able to get an appt for 10am this morning! Great… all I could think about was getting rid of the pain. So I get to the office and fill out the 4 pages of paper work since I was a new patient. They call me back to the exam room and start looking at my broken tooth and my wisdom tooth… tapping on it with this metal wand… asking me if it hurts. Um hell yes that hurts. So then my dentist tells me that he thinks I have an infection, that my bottom molar needs a root canal and that my wisdom tooth needs to be extracted. BUT… before that happens I need to take a weeks worth of antibiotics. Great…

BUT before any of this can happen I have to check with my OB. Fine, I figured that already, so I call them up and ask them, they say ok. Then my dentist tells that I need written medical clearance. *sigh* So I drive to my OB and get that and drive back to the dentist. The hygenist says that she will do X-rays. They put 2 lead vests over me since I’m pregnant and take the x-rays. Then the dentist comes back and looks at them. He point to this gray area and says see this.. that is all the infection in your tooth so you need to do the week of penicillin. And that the cavity in the wisdom tooth is too big so that it def needs to come out.

So I get my script and go to schedule the appt. Well the dr who would do the root canal is on vacation the week after my antibiotics so I have to wait another week. And the dr that would do the root canal doesn’t like to do extractions so I may have to make yet another appt during the week of my root canal to come back and have my tooth pulled. UGH!

On the positive… I am working towards getting my teeth healthy. Its going to cost about $500 but that isn’t bad considering that without the insurance it would cost almost $1500 so thats on the positive too. I just have to make it too the 18th… and then mouth surgery starts and I can’t have a general just local pain relief so May is going to be nothing but a huge pain. But atleast I’m starting this because I can’t deal with this mouth pain anymore.

Hopefully the penicillin starts killing the infection so my teeth don’t hurt as badly. Just 14 days…. and I will have the root canal. And I won’t lie… I’m terrified. And Chris won’t be able to go with me since he will be at work… so it will just be me with the little nudger for support. And I’m doing this so I can be a better mommy once the little one gets here, because I don’t want to be stressed out and in pain and taking it out on the baby. I want to be able to concentrate on baby… so if I have to go through all the pain this month and deal with it, cry about it… its worth it for the baby. Its just going to be a really long month.

Come on June!!!

wow that sucks. i can tell you i did get a wisdom tooth taken out once with just the Novocain and it wasn’t that bad. make sure they get you good and numb. they even had to break the tooth apart b.c it was impacted and it still wasn’t that bad, i didn’t even need to take the pain meds beyond the first day. the Antibiotics should help with the pain b/c the infection is usually what causes the pain to get so bad. I’ve totally been there, but i had to get the tooth taken out b/c a root canal cost to much and i didn’t have insurance and it the last molar on the bottom in the back so i didn’t care. i did that with just Novocain too and it wasn’t that bad.

I am so glad you will be able to get your teeth fixed. 10 years without going to the dentist is crazy! After you get the antibiotics for the infection you will start to feel much better. I had this happen to me before but my rootcanal filling fell out and i just never bothered to get it fixed until I was in throbbing pain. You will do great!

awwww babe that sucksss! i am glad ur teeth are getting fixed i just wish it wasnt hurting you/gonna hurt ya so much x

Root canals have come a LONG way. I’ve had like, 6 (2 teeth, 3 times each) and its seriously nothing. They shoot you up so good, I end up falling asleep. Just think, a healthy mouth is a healthy baby.

ouch! i hope the next couple of weeks go by very quickly for you!

I watched them do my husbands root canal and pull all 4 of his wisdom teeth and it was nothing. He wasn’t in pain afterwards or anything. You will do fine. The scariest part is getting there but afterwards you will not feel pain. The antibiotic will take away the pain also but make sure you still get them pulled or the infection will come back again.

RYN: No, it doesn’t bother you at all driving. If the wisdom tooth is really in there though, they’ll most likely put you out (if you can be put out) to get it done. Then you can’t drive. You’re really just psyching yourself out. Its not that bad. Think about it like this. You’ll be in pain for maybe 2 hours after but thats it. No more constant pain

Thats terrible! My wisdoms came in only while I was pregnant. Half way the first one, all the way (and turned crooked) with the second. I had them pulled just with a local. The only bad part is the pressure you feel and you can hear the crunching. See if you can wear an iPod or something. They usually just drill a little hole in the side so they can get a tool in there and pop it out. You’ll be ok

just make sure you let them know if you feel ANY pain, there might be a lot of pressure but they should make sure you are numb and don’t feel any shooting pain or sharp pain. i personally have a problem with needing a lot of Novocain for dental stuff or the other anesthetic they use if they have to do minor stuff that isn’t dental.

I am sorry about your teeth. I always got yelled at by the dentist when I was young so I stopped going. The dentist I have now doesn’t do that so I go every 6 months now. I hope you can get everything fixed and be pain free. I also hope you have GREAT insurance! lol
