As promised…the birth story!!!

Well now that I have a few extra moments I can catch you all up on what has gone down these past 2 weeks. Lets go back to last Tuesday!!

  • Tuesday June 12
  • I had a NST that day. The night before that I was having pains in my back that had me up almost ever 2 hours. I woke up on Tuesday to go and I had a pain so bad that I had to stop in my tracks until it went away. Driving to my NST was interesting. The pains were still there. Anyways, I got there, they hooked me up and as soon as they did a contraction hit. They were coming in intervals of 3-4 minutes apart. Right then and there they were transferring me up to Strong Hospital…where I didn’t want to go. They gave me another steroid shot and the ambulance took me up there. I called my mom and told her she had to go to Strong. She called Pat and my dad as well. When I got to Strong my dad was already there. They took me back into the High Risk: Labor and Delivery part where I got checks out. By that time I was 3cm dilated, 80% effaced but at 2 stage. They gave me Tylenol with codeine for the pain, but it wore off within an hour. They also gave me the contraction pills to make the contractions to stop coming. Well seeing the Tylenol wore off they gave me Vicodain for the pain and everything was all good. I stayed over night, and Pat stayed with me. They checked me again the next morning and there was no change so I got discharged with the limitation to rest as much as possible.

  • Wednesday June 13
  • Mom came and got Pat and I. Then we went to Wal Mart to fill my prescription for the contraction pills and to get my hospital stuff…shampoo, soap, etc, etc… I was having contractions in the store. We went home I laid on the couch where I continued to have contractions from 5:00 that night until 8 that night when my mom called the Birthing Center where they told my mom to take me back to Strong. I got back to Strong, they hooked me up and the contractions were more intense than the night before. The night before they weren’t measuring past 60. That night they were going up into the 80’s and when they came down the measurement never left the 50’s…until…they gave me another contraction pill and 2 more Vicodain. Everything calmed right back down and I got to go home…and this time with a prescription for Vicodain and I was told that I was on strict bed rest. GRAND!

  • Thursday June 14
  • Mom stayed home from work. She went and got my prescription filled and did exactly what I was told. I didn’t leave my moms couch. The pain in my back would come and go and it got to the point where it started to burn. I’d pop a pill and I’d be alright. In and out of sleep as well.

  • Friday June 15
  • Same as Thursday. Just laid there. Pain was increasing by the day, but the Vicodain still had an effect.

  • Saturday June 16
  • More and more discomfort. I had heat on my back around the clock. I couldn’t stand straight up or nothing. A hot shower helped…it got me to stand up straight. My mom and I thought it was because I was so constipated seeing the last time I had a bowel movement was on Tuesday. The Vicodain was starting not to take any effect.

  • Sunday June 17
  • I was so uncomfortable that day. My back felt like I was laying over a fire it was burning that bad. Vicodain did nothing. The shower did nothing. I was up and down, in and out of the bathroom all day. The beginning of that day my mom had given me a pill to help me poop. I went outside for a breath of fresh air and that was terrible. All day it felt like I had to poop but nothing. I couldn’t even pass gas. I didn’t want to eat or nothing. Couldn’t sleep. The heat wasn’t doing much. It got to be around 8:45 that night when I called the Birthing Center and told them that I couldn’t take it anymore that my back burned and that around 7 that night I went to stand up and a rush of fluid came out. Mom and I thought it was urine. So mom took me to the hospital. On the way there it felt like I had to poop every 2-3 minutes and I wanted to push. I held it back. On the way to the hospital 6 ducks, 3 babies, 2 white ones and a Mallard were crossing the street. So we had to wait for them. The only thing out of my mouth was “Are you kidding me!!??” We got to the hospital at 9:10 and they got me up to L and D. My mom called my dad to let him know and the Doctor told my mom that there was no time for phone calls that I was 8cm dilated, 100% effaced and at -1 stage. Also, when I mentioned about the rush of fluids at 7, my water had broke. Riley was coming. The last phone call was at 9:18…and it was only to my dad. Pat didn’t know. My brother called Pat and they picked him up. They had to take me from my room to the OR just as a precautionary. There almost wasn’t enough time to get the IV in. There wasn’t anytime to get my Penicillin going seeing I tested positive for Group B Strep. From my room to the OR, which was about 500ft. I went from 8cm dilated to 10cm dilated and had to push. Riley was here at 9:36pm. She came vaginally…and seeing there wasn’t anytime there was no drugs. They had to break the sac that Owen was in. He took his sweet old time. He came at 10:04pm, also vaginally. So I was in the hospital less than an hour and my kids had came. Seeing it went so fast Pat missed the birth. I was so out of it though. As soon as Riley came I asked my mom if she was sure it was a girl. My mom also go to cut Riley’s cord which made her day. Through all the pushing and stuff I ended up busting a blood vessel in both my eyes. And for 2 kids coming vaginally I only got 3 stitches. After all was said and done I was passed out sleeping by 12.

  • Monday June 18
  • Getting up for the first time was…interesting. The only thing I could think of was when a baby giraffe is born and when they go to stand and walk for the first time. The doctor came in and pushed on my tummy to make sure my uterus was going down and I wanted to hit him. It hurt. Then the Ped. came in. He told me that they were doing fine they just had to be put in the isolettes because they were having trouble maintaining there temperature and they had a feeding tube because they weren’t taking to the bottle. They were having trouble sucking and swallowing. Ok no biggie. The first time I seen them I cried. We weren’t told what we could do so all we did was look at them. We didn’t know we could open there portholes to touch them. 24 hours after they were born was when we got to hold them for the first time.

  • Tuesday June 19
  • Things were going good. The Ped. came in around 7-8ish and told Pat and I that they were getting transferred to Strong due to the fact they weren’t taking to the formula which was causing them to start dehydrating. Plus they had a touch of Jundis. I lost it. For the first 36 hours we were told they were fine and they were feeding great. They didn’t get transferred until midnight that night and I got discharged a few minutes later. Pat and I went and got my car from moms, came back to the house and crashed.

  • Wednesday June 20
  • Went to Strong. They had/have an IV in there head and the tube back in there noses. They were also in the NICU, and going back into that part scared the hell out of me. But they were moved to the NICU Annex: The Newborn Nursery. Stuff went ok until I left. Just felt terrible for leaving. Came home and crashed.

  • Today June 21
  • We went back to Strong. They got put under the lights to help clear up the Jundis. They are also alternating feeds, bottle one time then through the tube so they don’t over exert themselves. Today Riley about gave me a heart attack. I was feeding her and this time we did a bottle feed. She grabbed right a hold of her feeding tube and pulled it out. I just felt the sweat come pouring down and I thought I was going to pass out. The nurse took it completely out but before that she tried putting it back in. Pat had to shield my eyes away from that. I started crying my face off. I guess when the nurse was trying to put it back in the tube came out the other nostril. So seeing Riley wouldn’t lay still she just took it out and said she’d replace it when we left. So all in all they’re doing good. We’re thinking they’ll be there until the beginning of next week at the earliest, and when they came manage feedings alright they will be transferred back to Thompson [where I wanted to give birth and did =)] for observation for at least 7 more days.

Well that’s the story. When I get pictures uploaded I’ll post them. Probably this weekend. Going to go for now. It’s 9:10pm and I’m hungry and tired. Until next time…toodles.

    Congrats!

Wow, thats one hell of a story. Good job mama! You did good! I remember once the nurses inserted a NG tube in Matty, and he was screaming and screaming, it went in his nose and out his mouth (b/c he was screaming so bad), and I about fainted. It was so scary.

Oh, and Matty had an IV in his scalp too, and I think out of all the things they did to him in the NICU, that was what bothered me the most. I cried and cried when I saw that sticking out of his head. You are amazing, two preemies. It was so hard (for me) with just one.

Congratulations on your two little miracles! Can’t wait to see the pics and to hear that they are home with you both!
