Swing lesson 2 | Brunswick
Monday night saw my second formal lesson in Swing – this time we learnt basic six-step with leads on the left and follows on the right, leads with their right hand between the shoulderblades of the follows and follows with their left hand on the lead’s shoulder as per the normal side-by-side position. In this form of six-step, leads have their left hands out and follows take it with their right, feet pointing slightly forward with the bodies forming a kind of V-shape. This would be the closed position, and we then learnt to move through to the open position which ends with the follow’s right hand still in the lead’s left, but having changed sides with each dancer’s opposite arms out. The last phrase for the night was of-course joining together again to form the closed position.
Last Friday we went to the Fun Pit in Richmond which happens every second Friday, but this was my first weekly lesson in Brunswick. The teachers are fantastic, and the fellow dancers were all warm and friendly, and all fast learners. I really do like the Brunswick group, and this Thursday I might try the Yarraville group as my sister-in-law goes there.
Absolutely awesome fun, though I really would love a 2 hour lesson. I really do get such a buzz from dancing lessons, and I’m always full of energy afterwards. Hopefully sometime in the next six months though I can meet someone who lives nearby and can be a bit of a dance-partner so we can get practice in during the week! It also helps dancing regularly with one person as you both grow together and learn from each-other. It also opens up oportunities for social-dancing and attending classes together.
This is about the coolest thing I’ve done in a long while!
