Pain.

 Dear Diary;

What does sciatica feel like?

I am in PAIN. I drove to k-town to visit my brother and get my computer fixed (which I did, I’m on it now) and after I got there my back (which has been hurting mildly for a while) started to get really bad. By the time I went to bed, I couldn’t hardly move at all without wincing in pain. I thought after I slept I might feel better, but I certainly did NOT. I felt worse. I asked my bro to help me stand up and when I bent a little at the waist it hurt so much I burst into tears of sheer pain.  I stayed on his floor all day yesterday but I had to drive home last night- which was probably the most uncomfortable and painful drive I’ve ever done in my life. My back still hurts today but at least I can move a little bit.

I tried heat, ice, ibuprofen, Robaxacet, Neura Gel, Traumeel and vitamins and nothing seems to give me any relief at all.

 Ugh. a few more days in bed might make me feel better.

does it hurt down your leg too? if it’s sciatica nothing will really help the pain because it’s nerve pain and not muscle/tissue pain. Hope you feel better!

Senorita is right…sciatica is a nerve pain. It’s the sciatic bundle of nerves that run through a small hole in the tail bone area. It’s a large nerve that goes down your leg, so if the pain shoots down your leg..it’s probably sciatica. It can be helped with massage or chiropractic. Even if the pain is’nt sciatica I’d recommend a chiropractor because they can help other back related pains too.

Thanks for your note! I think you are right — if you think you are an artist, then you are, no? Eh, I dunno, lol. I’m sorry you are in pain – you know, I have tons of back problems because I’ve had terrible posture all my life – so I finally went to a chiropractor. It is a slow process, but am slowly feeling better – even just going there once a week helps a lot! It also helps

relieve stress because they adjust your back, stuff like that… You know, I think….although am not 100% sure…that sciatica is due to your vertebrae being misaligned, so then the nerves around the bones get oversensitive and cause pain…. I might be mistaken though – you should go to a doctor or chiropractor!! I hope you feel better!!!!!

Adopt the position of most comfort. How far down the leg does the pain go? Sciatic nerve can be irritated by a number of things. Could be stemming directly from the back but it can also be pinched in a muscle in your butt.

If it doesn’t settle down in a few more days then let me know and get yourself into physio (not chiro or massage) to be assessed. We can give manual therapy treatment as well as anti-inflammatory/pain modalities to help settle the nerve down, then exercises to try and correct imbalances and prevent further issues.

oh no!!! feel better hunny. take a warm bath maybe it will help a bit

My understanding of sciatic pain is that it runs down your leg from your tailbone and is incredibly painful. Finding a position that is most comfortable may help calm the nerve. Sorry you’re in so much pain.

Sciatic is a compression injury. Yes it is a nerve pain. The nerve runs out from the lower back L4-S2 (where it can get compressed if you have a vertebral problem; chiropractor) and exits down the leg between the piriformis muscle in your buttocks. The piriformis has a gap where the nerve emerges. If the piriformis is tight, the nerve can get compressed there (massage).

It doesn’t sound like you have sciatic. It sounds like you have back pain. Your hips are tight (majority of all back pain originates in the hips) and you probably have a lot of trigger points in your QL muscle. Lay on the floor and have someone step on you with their heel on your butt and your low back. They have to hold on to something so they can regulate the pressure. Flat heel.

Stay off the bones. If you can’t get on the floor, continue using heat(20 min on 20 min off) and try your best at leg stretches (knee to your chest). Find stretches that work your hips. easy does it. If it’s really bad, bed will help but you can’t just lay there expecting it to go away. Your muscles are tight. Go get a massage. Or just tell someone to rub it. Where it hurts is where you want to be
