Dear Diary;
First: dephomo.
You have no idea how much the background bugs the shit out of me. I took a bunch of pictures and uploaded them to my computer only to realize that I forgot about the stupid bed sheets.. so I set it up again and re-shot but I was using a mirror and the way I had it angled had a big smudge on it so those pictures didn’t turn out the way I wanted either. In the end, I was just sick of taking pictures so I said screw it and went with this one. Bah humbug.
Hmm.. that’s coming out a lot darker than I expected it to.
anyway..
So here’s the rant deal.
I have a beef with people who have no money going out and buying top of the line digital SLR cameras thinking that the camera will improve their picture taking skills. These days, you can go out and buy a point-and-shoot camera with 10+ mega pixels and get sharp, large pictures for a lot less money. Why spend money on a top of the line camera if you don’t know how to use it and aren’t going to take it off the automatic settings, ya know?
Okay, so not ALL people who buy these cameras leave it on the automatic settings, but I’m willing to bet that a lot of people do. Spending your non-existent money on a camera when you don’t know anything about lighting or composition or aperture or shutter speed is a waste of money in my opinion. If you are buying the camera because you want to learn about these things- why wouldn’t you learn on a less expensive or used camera; especially when you don’t have the money to throw away.
I know you’re wondering why I’m ranting about this and I’ll tell you. Occasionally I pop into *her* diary to see if she’s written anything publicly. I don’t know why I do it- most of the time it makes me so angry that I end up throwing my pillow across the room or something. I’m setting myself up for punishment I know- but I’m drawn in by something. You can think I’m a horrible person for doing it all you want, but in MY mind, it’s justified by the fact that she’s read my most personal, private thoughts and if she chooses to write publicly then it’s fair game. Lately, she’s mentioned that she bought a new camera, and she even had a picture up temporarily and I could see it was a top line digital SLR. She mentioned something about a payment plan for it (which makes sense since she clearly can’t afford it) and it ticked me off. I kept thinking “why would she spend money that they clearly need for other, more important things on a camera she doesn’t know how to use?” Why do I care what she does with her money? Because ODSP is NOT meant for buying her toys and it makes me INCREDIBLY angry that this is what she chooses to spend that money on when there are other people who get turned down by ODSP who need it a lot more than she does for a lot more important things.
She could have purchased a more affordable point-and-shoot camera that would have produced images just as good as what she’s getting from the SLR. It makes me wonder if the only reason she bought it was to show off that she has one- not because she wanted to actually learn anything about it. If she wanted to learn- she could have done that with books and a cheaper camera. As someone who has devoted time and money to learning how to take pictures and use a camera properly and know all the functions of it- how it works and what the specific parts are… it makes me angry when people buy these cameras knowing nothing and then they expect to take mind blowing images because they have a fancy camera.
Bah. I’m loosing myself in this stupid, stupid rant.
The pictures I posted in the last entry were proof that you can take just as good or better pictures with a point-and-shoot if you know how to use it. In that same respect, if you’re just going to use automatic settings on your SLR and not pay attention to lighting or composition, you’re going to end up with the same old crap people expect from smaller, cheaper cameras. For the record, Pictures 1 and 4 were my SLR and pictures 2 and 3 were point-and-shoot. Point made.
(I really just needed to write that all out to realize I’m being an idiot. You can ignore it now.)
Haha. My dad did the same thing, and it still makes me want to punch him in the face when I think about it. When I was in highschool and my parents were still married, he bought this expensive camera and then actually offered to photograph his brother’s wedding…every picture he ever took was pure crap. Thank God a crackhead stole the camera. He needed to be taken down a notch.
