Kit (2)

Please read this first if you don’t know who Kit is.

27 May 2006 – Speech Day

Thank God that he endured all his exams. Not without a price though; he’s now in a wheelchair. He looked quite upbeat, though he’s always massaging his legs as if checking to see that they’re still attached to his body.

"How are your legs now?" I asked.

"Not as painful as before, but they’re too weak to support my body," he replied.

"Can you stand up or walk at all?"

"Yeah, sort of. I think I can do 15 seconds on average."

"You’re taking medications right? What about physiotherapy?"

"Medicine yes; physio no. Doctor said I’m not fit for it yet."

I wanted to ask him why he came to school at all since he’s in such a poor condition, but it’d be stupid if I did coz I already knew the answer. Nothing in the world could stop him from coming to his own graduation ceremony. His body is weak, but his determination is strong as steel.

There is no wheelchair access to the Hall stage so we had to lift him up and walk him slowly. Another teacher helped me put his wheelchair on stage. When he appeared in his wheelchair to get his Best Improvement Award (imagine he beat all other classmates even though his health was least fit for studying), everyone was applauding. I tried to out-clap everyone but it was impossible – most teachers know he has cancer and are more than glad to see him still fighting bravely.

After the ceremony, Kit showed me his portfolio of graphic designs. When he showed me his exquisite velvet-bound portfolio, I thought it was a present bought by his parents for his graduation or something. I was speechless when he told me all the contents were actually his works. It turned out that he’s talented in visual art and has designed all sorts of layouts, covers, logos, etc., for our school for many years. I never knew this. He’s a constant source of surprise and inspiration for me.

He told me his goal is to study graphic design in university and to become a graphic designer. I hope he can make it. I hope God will have mercy on him – and on us too, because we need people like Kit to be our role model.

If i were present in your school’s graduation ceremony, i think i would’ve cried! The courage and positive attitude that Kit shows makes me feel ashamed of myself (and my problems, which are petty compared to his)… Graphic design is a good idea and i think it will also be a good career choice for him, as he can work freelance and manage his own time and may suit his health better. i know

May 31, 2006

it’s still early to say as he’s just finished high school. but my best wishes to him, i’m sure he can make it one day! 🙂
