An opportunity
Noters Beware!! This is a “mean-note” free diary.
I took Slater (and Scout, although he was kind of an afterthought) to obedience classes at a dog park which is located about 20 miles away from my house. My original purpose in taking Slater was because I want to eventually do some form of volunteer Therapy work with him. Both dogs passed obedience level 1 and 2. After that I was going to try for Slater’s Canine Good Citizen certification. However, my landlady’s 13 year old daughter is a member of an after-school club and they had a presentation from a lady who is with West Michigan Therapy Dogs. My landlady’s daughter, Natasha, got a bunch of information for me, and I called the lady who did the presentation. We’ve been playing phone-tag for 2 days now, but it looks like we both will have some free time to set some things up tomorrow!!! They have to pre-screen Slater for his temperament, and to see if he knows basic obedience. (This has me a tad nervous, because even though Slater passed obedience 1 and 2, I haven’t really worked with him much over the winter. My apartment is small and with 2 dogs, they kind of work against each other sometimes. Now that the weather is better I need to take Slater out by himself more and start working the commands more.) But they will be offering a Therapy Dog class right in the next town over for 8 weeks on Mondays…and through my landlady’s daughter’s club, I can do it for only $60!! Double bonus! Now…all I need is for Slater to actually listen to me, instead of being a bonehead. He can do it, but sometimes he plays a doofus. He’s got the perfect personality for it. He LOVES people. He just needs to learn to tone down his enthusiasm a little, because he can totally wipe people out with his tail. This is so awesome! Slater could be a Therapy Dog in a few months!!!
