Remind me again why I love my job….
Noters Beware!! This is a “mean-note” free diary.
So today began like any other day…get up…let dogs out…feed dogs…feed myself…shower…get dressed…tell dogs how much they are loved…go to work.
But it sure didn’t end like any other day. I am now sitting here, anticipating (for lack of a better word) a subpoena for a court date. And no. I didn’t do anything wrong. My subpoena is due to someone else’s stupidity. See, I was the MOD (manager on duty) at work today, and I busted a shoplifter. A stupid, stupid lady who had the nerve to steal clothes for her 7-year-old daughter. While her daughter was with her. Actually the lady had two kids with her. Her 7-year old daughter and a brand new baby. AND the lady also had her father with her…an old skinny guy who reeked of cigarette smoke. The father drove her there. And while I do believe he was aware of what his daughter was doing…I don’t believe he wanted to be part of it. He hung back away from her for most of the time she was in the store. He just seemed like a tired, sad old man. I found out later that he has custody of the 7-year-old girl. I don’t know any more of their family situation than that.
The part that gets to me is how this lady had such little respect for her kids that she would drag them into something like this. The little girl was so upset. She didn’t know what was going to happen to her mother. And in an abstract way, the mom even dragged the newborn baby into it. She used the kid’s diaper bag to conceal the clothes and then said the kid needed a new diaper. She then went out of the store to supposedly “change” the kid. When all she did was change diaper bags. She left with a yellow one and came back in with a big black one. Empty. And it got fuller as she was shopping.
By the time the second bag got fuller, I was on to her. I found 4 empty hangars…all sized 6x…one on the floor, and 3 empty on the rack. And then I saw her put a gray shirt in the diaper bag. I then called the cops. The sheriff who came inventoried the merchandise she had on her plus what she hid in the truck. She had 3 outfits for the daughter plus 2 shirts for herself. We found two other shirts that she tried to get that she shoved under a clothing rack.
She did get to go home. The sheriff put a warrant on her, so if she gets caught doing ANYTHING, she goes directly to jail. Plus she’ll also have to come to court…as do I (to testify against her).
So much for an ordinary day.
Wow- she certainly isn’t a very smart shoplifter. Poor kids. I’m sorry you have to go through that, but good you caught her for their sake, if nothing else!
