It’s All Brand New and yet…It’s Not

Things have been topsy turvy busy around here for the past two months. Changes upon changes. I’ll try to update everything. I write so infrequently, don’t know if I have any regs left!

1. As I wrote about before, our financial situation was very precarious. Art and I were behind on the mortgage, putting groceries on credit cards, things like that. One night, a month or so ago, my car broke down/battery died while I was out. Art was home with Lexi, who was asleep. I called him and we decided for me to take a cab back home (it was 5 minutes away) and he would call our roadside assistance. After the cab dropped me off, he went up to the shopping plaza parking lot with his car. He arrived JUST as the roadside assistance guy was. They jump started my car, drove it home and the guy drove Art back to get his car.

Art struck up a conversation with the guy about roadside assistance and next thing you know, the guy tells Art his company is hiring in our area. A few days later, Art gets the job and now does roadside assistance. Just when we needed the extra money. It’s the kind of job where he’s on call, so if he’s not getting a call to go out and roadside assist someone, he just works at his regular job, his eBay business.

Did I mention that the very next day, and ever after, my car battery has had no problem?

God works in mysterious ways, even dead car batteries on the very night, in the very area where the roadside assistance company guy is looking for help.

2. I went on a bunch of interviews this summer, intending to go back to work full time to help catch up on bills. All the districts, about 10, said they wanted to hire me but the board would not "let them" due to recent funding cuts. I have 14 years experience and a masters. The boards would not approve anyone above a B.A. and 6 or so years experience because of what they’d have to pay them. I never thought my experience and education would work against me! So, I wasn’t being hired because I couldn’t teach…but because I could.

So, instead, I applied for a few subbing jobs, including the district where I was for 5 years before being home with Lex. They are thrilled to have me and plan to have me sub as often as possible. Hopefully, this leads to a permanent position if/when a position opens up. There are a couple social studies teachers near retirement, so it could happen. I’d LOVE to be back in that building. Maybe that’s why I didn’t get any other job? But also….how does this work, though, if we get matched/placed with a newborn??

No idea.

3. I’m also subbing at an inner city charter high school. A friend of mine teachers there and recommended me for the job. I taught there 3 days this week. The kids are great, the school is nuts as are most charter schools the first few years!

Our plan is for me to work Tuesdays and Wednesdays, when Lexi is in school all day and occasional Mondays, when my mom will watch her.  It pays $103/day (before taxes) so it’ll bring in some money, even if we just turn around and use that money to pay Lexi’s preschool tuition!
