Jobless?

So, I was informed Friday that the tax consulting firm I’ve been working for over the last two years is closing. All employees will no longer be employed with the company after May 31st, including me.

The good news is that the reason for the closing is that the two founding partners can no longer get along (after 15 years of working together) and are both planning on starting their own consulting firms independent of one another. It is expected that most of the consultants will receive offers from at least one of the new firms, but, then, there are no guarantees. I’d say I’m about 95% sure that I’ll be employed when May 31st arrives, but that’s still a lot less certain than I was a few days ago.

It’s altogether bad news at any rate, although I suppose technically it could end up being a good thing in the big scheme of things. However, considering I was quite happy with my job as it was, I’m not exactly thrilled with the shake-up. Moreover, I really enjoyed working with the four other consultants and it’s essentially a sure thing that all four of us will not be working for the same company anymore. Granted, that we wouldn’t work together forever was inevitable regardless of all this, but it’s still a bit of a bummer.

Meanwhile, while I am relatively confident that I will get at least an offer from one of the new firms, I literally have no idea what to expect in terms of what that offer will be. Will I be offered the same pay? More? Less? I have no clue.

I am also now reading into every decision that’s been made at the company at the last few weeks. Did I suddenly get switched onto a case by one boss, because she expects me to work on that same case for her new company? Did another boss encourage me to move to California because he’s concerned there won’t be a job for me? Etc.

Oh, and remember how I just bought a house? Yeah, I was basing where I was looking around the location of our current office. Which will cease to exist on May 31st, meaning I am likely to face a much longer commute to work now. Yet another bummer.

At any rate, this all has to be sorted out very quickly or I will very quickly have to dust off my resume. I probably need to regardless.

Ugh, nice timing with the new mortgage! It’s almost like this stuff comes up at the most inopportune times on purpose! You probably will get offered a position by one of the partners. I hope it turns out to be a good opportunity for you.

Bummer! But I’m sure it will all turn out good for you. 🙂

I actually got that heart-in-my-throat feeling from reading your first lines. You just bought a house! Jesus! You’re remarkably upbeat about the whole thing; it’s really encouraging that they’re each going to be starting their own firms, but like you said they better get on that shit. Hoping for the absolute best for you.

I hope everything turns out ok. Who knows? Maybe both companies will make you a job offer and you can negotiate a new (maybe better!) pay. Let’s wait and see, but I’m sure everything will be alright.

You’re always remarkably upbeat. I hope it works out for you, but I’d dust off the resume anyway, just in case. ~I’ll be

Matt, I find it funny that everyone keeps commenting on how “upbeat” you are, when they don’t know that even though you’re 95 percent sure, you’re still thinking about that 5 percent. A lot more than you let on. Yes, maybe the hint to move to California was a good one! I’m kidding.

that sucks. I was just reading in a book that most orgs will not live longer than 40 years. another one bites the dust. Hopefully they will scoop you up and in gracefully

Oh no I am so sorry to hear this. Hang in there Im sure it will all work out ok.

sorry, matt, especially after buying a house this is horrendous news. that said, i note it is the second time your job has been in crisis. i wonder if you would be well behooved to work for yourself. you are smart, capable enough to be a consultant. my cousin who is a consultant rakes in $30k a month. she bullshits and used her tits to get ahead. i know very well you dont need to do any of that.

Hey man! Been a while. Sorry to hear about your job, but a smart guy like you should be just fine. Hope you’re doing well, I’m gonna go leave Heather a note too.
