More Job Stuff
In response to my question of “does this seem like a decent job offer?” from yesterday, many of you rather rationally responded with “Well, it depends! What are the benefits?” Yes, nothing gets by you diary readers . . .
The benefits are pretty traditional though – after I work there for a year I can get a 401k plan and they’ll match it up to 4% of my taxable salary. They’ll also pay for all of my client related travel expenses (meals, mileage, hotel, etc) and give me $50 a night to do what I please with anytime I’m traveling, which I thought was a nice perk.
As far as what I’d actually be doing on the job, well, I’d be doing a bit of everything, at least in accounting terms. Initially, I’d probably be focusing mostly on company audits, while doing tax work during tax season. As I become more experienced, they’d likely transition me more towards the tax side of things, since that’s my specialization, but they don’t want me working primarily in tax until I’m a bit more experienced, since if I worked there now I’d just be filling out returns and such. The auditing environment would be more dynamic and give me more valuable experience so that I could move towards being in a higher-ranking tax position, eventually. Or at least that’s what they tell me.
Right, most of you probably still have no idea what I’ll be doing, but that’s ok. I’m not even entirely sure either (nor am I convinced that they’re entirely sure), but I definitely won’t be specializing in any one particular area. Which could be good, I suppose, at least it’ll add variety to my life.
On the whole, I’m definitely leaning towards accepting the offer. I agree in principal with those of you who left notes saying that I should shop myself around a bit more, but I don’t think I mentioned in the previous entry that I actually know a few people who work at this firm and that, thus, this could be a, er, somewhat generous offer. Basically, I don’t want to push my luck and not take this offer and be stuck in a very competitive environment where I don’t have any “in” like I do here.
Ok, right, I promise to not mention accounting in here for a bit.

I think my response would’ve been a little different knowing that you’ve got connections with this firm. If the people you know are happy there and if you think they’ve helped to get you a good deal there, then you should be more inclined to take it. But like I said, I have zero experience when it comes to job hunting.

All I know is I couldn’t do whatever it is you are describing…All those forms and numbers would make my eyes bulge, and sadly, kill me right then and there.

I think taking it would be a wise idea. The benefits sound good enough, and a 4% match is really good for a 401K.

I think it’s a good decision. Like I said, if you’re unhappy, you can find another place WHILE WORKING. It’s a lot better than NOT working AND trying to find a job, when the pressure is so much more intense. For you it wouldn’t be as bad, since I’m sure your family would be accommodating, but at the same time, I also feel like you’d be unjustly hard on yourself, if you couldn’t find one right away.

Hmm. Yeah, if I were you I’d take it. Seems like a good offer. ♥ Andrea

matttttttty when is your birthday?

Yeah, maybe you could take the job and then keep looking while your still employed. That way you get the security but also the chance of getting something better. Congrats, by the way! 🙂

I think it’s good you think your job offers through…I suck at that. Good luck in whatever you decide!

oh, so NOW you’re saying they only offered you the job because you know somebody. come on, dude, where’s your self-esteem? seriously. i think you should do what you think is best and not second-guess yourself afterwards. i am the king of second-guessing and i don’t think it’s ever a good thing.

Christ. I know they say they only give jobs with money to kids with money, but I’ve still never known enough workshy students to witness this in action. You have to take it, surely!

Sounds like a good offer–congrats!

I talked to Andrew’s dad and he said that it sounded a little low, but that it was hard to say because he wasn’t sure what you had specialized in and what you would be doing. Since you answered both of those questions I will call him back and let him know and I should have an answer for you in a day or so. I’m sorry that it’s taken me so long to get back to you.
