An Entry, But Worth Waiting For? (not so much.)
I have a gripe that might be a result of my misunderstanding or it’s the result of a whole lot of other people misunderstanding. How often is this going to work out to be my misunderstanding? Usually. But this time, I’m not so sure.
Yesterday was Memorial Day. Parades and wreath layings, etc. The big parade in D.C. featured veterans from as far back as the Korean War/Conflict. A spokesman for the parade, an official speaking on behalf of official Washington, described the parade as a tribute to all the veterans and their families. He thought it was appropriate to show these veterans that we all respect the job they did and/or are doing.
But Memorial Day isn’t a day to pay tribute to the veterans of wars, unless they are deceased. Memorial Day was intended to honor the war dead. Veterans’ Day is intended to honor the veterans. Is this too hard to remember? Have I not remembered it correctly?
Here’s another patriotic gripe of mine, "God Bless America." Why is it ever sung during the seventh inning stretch of ballgames? And why do people think you have to stand and put your hand over your heart to sing it? Would these same people stand and hold their heart for "Yankee Doodle Dandy?" How about "It’s a Grand Old Flag." These are all "patriotic" songs and not only would it be considered silly to stand for each, it should be silly to stand for "God Bless America." Unless, of course, you intend to jump to your fee and cross your heart each and every time you say the word "flag." Or at least when "flag" refers to the ‘Merican flag, goll dernit.
Sit down, you’re confusing Nationalism with Patriotism, and that’s a very serious misunderstanding.
No baseball this week, the Nats have been out of town. And that’s probably a good thing because it takes a few days to recover from too many games in one week.
One really good baseball thing did happen this week, our tickets for the doubleheader came through. One of the earlier games this month (or was it last month?) got rained out. They rescheduled the makeup game when the Marlins will be back in town, and they did so by making one of the upcoming dates a doubleheader. I quickly submitted our request for cooshy seats, with free food and seatside waiters for that date (Diamond Club). We got the tickets and since it’s a doubleheader, we get two games for the price of one. And since the tickets only cost me some of our season ticket holder points, we get twice the game for half the cost. Or same cost but twice the game, whichever. Free food and eight hours of baseball. It’s a good thing it’s on a Friday, otherwise I’d be a zombie at work the next day.
I have arrived at a couple of Aha! moments with my application. I will be adding a user login to my app, thus preventing any non approved users from using it. I’m learning all about MD5 hashing (yeah, yeah, I know it isn’t 100% secure, but I don’t need it to be) and I will be accepting user account requests and/or password changes by hand. Not too terribly onerous, now. I can only hope that it becomes too much of an issue. Too many users means success.
I had a pounding headache for most of the weekend. I wonder if it’s just a coincidence that my headache would come on/worsen when the house was shut up and the air conditioner on? Hmm, thinking about that makes my head hurt.
Ender is out.
ryn: what a jerk! the folks at the marathon noticed that C3PO had his memory board wipes but R2D2 never did… that little droid knew everyone’s secrets!! And was probably all “ewww!” or “beeeepblooop!” when Luke and Leia kissed… and by the way, neither of them had an appropriate reaction when they found out they were related. Luke wasn’t bothered by the fact that he had lusted after Leia for the past year or so? I guess that’s how they do in the Skywalker family.
