My Scooter…

Hey All,

I was surprised that Scooter didn’t want to come out. She was due May 1st, but I had to be induced on Friday, May 8th, 2009 and she was born at 8:51 pm that day. She was 8 lbs 9 oz, and about 22 in (55.9 cm – there is debate whether she was 21.5 inches [54.6 cm] or 22.5 inches [57.2 cm], so I’ve taken the middle). I wasn’t induced until about 10 am. They told me at about 4 pm that they would be breaking my water at 6 pm – and I said I wanted my epidural before they broke my water. I was okay until about 5 pm, and I requested my epidural. They had a hard time getting it placed right. Not quite sure why. Well anyway, Chris was there when they broke my water, and he described it as "Niagara Falls" gushing in time with my contractions. The force of the water coming out when they first broke my water was so great that I over-shot the bag and got some on the nurses and even Chris! Well anyway, after that my contractions were exponentially greater. At about 8:20 pm I told the nurses that I was felt I was ready to deliver. They checked, and I was fully dilated and effaced, so they went to get the doctor, but she had to do an emergency C-section. They told me to "hold it in" – just blow out my mouth instead of bearing down with the contractions. After about 20 minutes of this I felt I couldn’t "hold it in" any longer and I felt like my baby was sliding out. The doctor came in (she had a student assistant who screwed up and put her own gown on wrong so it had to be re-done), and she let the student check me, and the student thought I had regressed. Last time they checked me I think I was at 0 and the student thought I was at -2; the doctor felt me and said the student was feeling Scooter’s head and that I was actually +2, and ready to push (well no DUH!). My left leg was asleep at this point, so the nurses and Chris held up my legs and I gave 2 or 3 good pushes and she was out! She had a lot of mucus because she slid through my "birth canal" so quickly, so she had to be kept on her side so as not to choke. My left leg was asleep from the epidural, and I couldn’t walk on it by myself until halfway through the next morning. I was released around 11 am on Sunday, May 10th which was Mother’s Day! My total labour time from the time I was induced was about 11 hours.
