I swear to tell the truth…

"I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, so help me God." Does that truth have meaning? There is no safety from the truth simply by swearing in god’s name. It would be naive to think so. The truth is higher than any person, any god. Getting to the truth can sometimes be very challenging. We all know the truth of the matter, that just because you believe in JC, or any other god doesn’t mean you are not culpable in lying. If you are Catholic, you tell the priest you lied and for penance, awards you a couple of Hail Marys and your good to go to lie again. So what good is "So help me God" when the Catholic priest is just going to absolve you of any lying. Now on the contrary, just because you don’t believe in god, doesn’t make you a liar. So why in hell are we so worried, so concerned with taking an oath to tell the truth that exclaims "So help me God!" It doesn’t make any difference. It doesn’t make any sense. If you want to talk about god, go to church and tell god the truth or tell him a lie if you want. Such an oath is no guarantee of the truth and not bringing god into the oath is no guarantee that a person is lying. It should be something like this "I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and if I don’t, I realize I could go to jail if I don’t tell the truth." That has a lot more power than "So help me God!" trust me. So you can either fear god or you can fear going to jail. Which one would you fear the most? So just calm down you holy rollers and keep your religious beliefs in your church and not in the courtroom.
