My pain is never simple

I can taste his lips on mine
His smell is in my skin
I don’t want to wash him away
But the rain falls down
Destroying this facade
And bringing my pain back

This familiar hole in my chest
Trying to breathe around the pain

Tears are just below my smile
While our goodbyes echo in the air
He’ll wish on a star out at sea
But I’ll wish on the rain
Someday won’t come quick enough
He’s my everything and nothing

This familiar hole in my chest
Trying to breathe around the pain

His laughter can echo in my head
His smile imprinted on my eyes
But I won’t see him again
On the day I walk down the aisle
I won’t see his smile
As I present his greatgrandchild

This familiar hole in my chest
Trying to breathe around the pain

‘You were special because you were first’
The echos will catch me unawares
And the rain pounds on my car
Temptation to turn the wheel
Drive into the guardrail
My pain is never simple

This familiar hole in my chest
Trying to breathe around the pain
