Las Mariposas III

I write this every year around this time because I feel that this is an important topic. Please take some time to help other women, we have to learn to support one another or things like this will continue.

The Butterflies

The Butterflies (Las Mariposas), the Maribel sisters, were women who put an end to a totalitarian tyrant. Rafael Trujillo was the tyrannical dictator of the Dominican Republic from 1930-1961.He made millions suffer at his hands, thousands were brutally tortured, raped, and murdered on his command. Yet, the Butterflies helped bring an end to this man and his atrocious reign of terror.

Minerva, Patria, and Maria Teresa were The Butterflies. Women who stood up to this oppressive dictator and his horrendous behavior. These women were martyrs for their country and now a household name in the Dominican Republic, South America, and Central America. The date of their death, November 25 is a day now known as "International Day to Stop Violence Against Women." This day did not start until 1999, more than thirty years after their assassination, but it is finally here and well known.

On November 25, take a small part of your day and be thankful for how truly lucky you are to be a healthy, happy woman. Realize that there are others out there that are not nearly as lucky as you are. Do something nice for another woman. Do not let this day pass you by, it is too important to ignore.

I read a book about them, I think it was by Julia Alvarez. I wish I had a chance to be brave. Caught you on random.

Thank you for that. Read isabelle Allende`s memoir over the summer re growing up in Chile. I remember the Pinochet years as reported here at that time and the bravery of the Mothers of the Disappeared. Had never heard of the oppressive regime in Dominica though.
