E-books

The entry before this one was taken right from the Grimm’s Fairy Tails. A collection of stories gathered from around the world by two brothers who’s last name was Grimm. Thus Grimm’s Fairy tails. (I have never seen the movie “The Brothers Grimm” and I am not sure what it is about.)

Unfortunately, this e-book edition has been edited and is not the exact original stories that the Grimm Brothers collected. The original stories of Cinderella, Hansel & Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood and such were full of the macabre and violence.

Take Cinderella, for example. In the original story when the two step sisters tried the shoe on and it did not fit – the one sister chopped off her toes and the other her heel to make it fit.

But enough of that…

I am really getting into the e-book thing. I am not purchasing best sellers, but I am really enjoying reading the many classics and other free e-books that are out there.

I enjoy reading my e-books on a tablet pc. It makes me feel like I am in Star Trek. LOL Well not only that but I don’t need to turn on a light if I am reading an e-book instead of a paper book. Oh, and I hate to say this, but when I read paper books, Kal has a tendency of interrupting me more!

So far I have over 6 pages of e-books in my MS Reader Library. So far I have read over 8 books and a short story. I have read Daddy Long Legs (a wonderful story told through letters written by an orphan who is given the gift of a college education to her anonymous benefactor), The Phantom of the Opera, The Picture of Dorian Grey, Grimm’s Fairy Tails, just to name a few. There are hundreds upon thousands of books out there that I have yet to discover!

So they are not currently on the NY-Times best sellers list or part of the Oprah Book Club and some were written over a hundred years ago, but they ARE wonderful stories that spark in your mind and paint vivid pictures as much today as they did when they were written.

I love the original Grimms Fairy Tails, they are, first and foremost, cautionary tales, like many of the so-called ‘fairy tales’ of that era and prior eras, they were not written purely to entertain, but also to make a point. I believe they were also retellings of various tales told by word-of-mouth in Austria & Germany at the time in which the Brothers lived.

The movie, Brothers Grimm, was entertaining and posed a possible “reality-connection” with many of the stories that were folk-tales in the area, but is purely fantasy. A good watch, nonetheless. Lightheartedly macabre perhaps. I prefer the un-Disneyfied version of most stories, for instance the Little Mermaid, who died of a broken heart when her love married another, and turned to foam on the sea

I will have to try that e-book thing one day. I love to read! RYN: Thank you for your note! I’m also adding you to my faves 🙂

Most Fairy Tales were pretty horrific (e.g. Cinderella and the foot-maiming sisters) because they were used to terrify children into behaving themselves!

I LOVE Grimm fairy tales… I have an old book of them somewhere in my Mom’s attic. I’ll have to track that down. The Brothers Grimm is a good watch, especially if you enjoyed fairy tales. It’s not too Disney-fyed either, still macabra enough.

You need to check out Project Gutenberg online, it’s all free novels online, you can search by book title or author. It rocks =)

I found most of the Anne of Green Gables at Gutenberg Online. I had only read the one, and was happy to see that there was a whole series.

Don’t forget to take all your papers and lists with you today. I think you said you had an appointment today. You said you were forgetting alot, so I’m reminding you. 🙂 Just know that I’m thinking about you. Keep me posted.

I know what you mean about the original fairy tales, I actually like reading the original Grimm Brothers. I used to check the book out all the time from my school library. The themes are macabre but fascinating.
