Promised Entry – this one re: Phantom of the Opera
I am sorry I have not written in a long while. I have not been feeling well. I have been SOOOO tired. I finally went and had my Lupus blood test on Thursday. I return to my Neurologist I believe on the 24th so I will let you all know what he says.
I finally saw Phantom of the Opera the other day. It was a very beautiful movie – but I was disappointed, though. I read the book, which was written by Gaston Louis Alfred Leroux, before I saw the movie. I realize they cannot go exactly like the book – there were more differences than similarities in this one.
In the movie and theater production The Phantom / Opera Ghost / Angel of Music, who’s name is Erik, was quite good looking but in the book he was totally deformed and had no nose. His eyes shone at night like fire. His mask was a “Death’s Head” or skeleton mask. His hands were withered and like skeleton hands and smelled like death. He was an evil vile man who committed murder for fun, yes, he has a VERY dark past….
They changed M.M. Giry’s role – in the musical she was working with the dancers – in the book she was the caretaker for opera box #5. She was very poor and shabbily dressed and she did NOT bring Erik to live at the opera house. He was the masonry contractor when they were building the opera house and that is how he was able to build his house on the lake. In the book it was an actual house with doors – and a torture chamber.
They left out a few major characters from the book as well.
But it was a very beautiful movie.
If you have a chance, read the book. You will not be disappointed!

The Paris Opera House is real. And there IS a lake in the bottom cellar!
And with that I bid you adieu~
I have to do some grocery shopping and laundry and I know it will wear me out. I will try to get on the computer more.

Reminds me of how much they distorted the Wicked book when they took it to the theatre. On the stage, water doesn’t melt Elphaba… Glinda & Fiyero had a fling and Nessarose can’t walk. In the book, E melts… G & F never crossed paths romantically and Nessarose’s real handicap is that she has no arms. Thankfully the stage version is well done, so I can deal with the distortion LoL.

Phantom of the Opera has always been one of my favorites. I’ve always wanted to see it performed on stage! (That and CATS). It does aggravate though, especially the author in me, how much of the content/context is bastardized when adapted for some other form of medium such as stage, screen etc.
