Camp art show w/pics
Dear Diary,
This has been a very productive week. I started my summer job Monday and had a great group of kids, two boys and 6 girls. They had great ideas and acted on them; so different from my permanent teaching job.
I had them make a "cone" puppet and they were to make a prop to go with it…they were very imaginative! One of the boys made so many things I had to finally give him time guides so he wouldn’t use up all the materials. Two of the girls had their mother there who was running all the programs voluntarily. She is volunteering for a month. I’d say that is some volunteer which is a good trade-off for having her two girls there for free.
During lunch and after lunch we played many games. The contract states that we must stay with the kids all day even during lunch which isn’t bad because we eat outside and then go play kick ball or some other running games. The kids really liked relay racing so I stood and timed them. They loved it.
The last day of the week, I had the kids create their own display of their projects. The week was based on 3-D sculptures and I told them the bigger the better. They liked the idea. The displays were magnificant for kids of this age and they really got into it. I sent letters home to the parents for them to come and look at the displays. The parents were blown away…made me smile.
Here are some of their projects.
This is a giant sub made from paper, plaster and styrofoam.
This is one display. I had the kids write about their displays, explaining their features. Check out the puppet "gardener" and her flower…
This display was a Hawaiian theme. The puppet is armless because she didn’t like the way the arms turned out so I told her to just go with the armless look if she so desired. That is a coconut on the ground. The tree was some project and the leaves took quite some time. I love it.
This is an ipod made by a 13 yr. old. The materials she used were paper mache, styrofoam, pipecleaners and paint. Pretty imaginative I’d say.
This is a robin’s nest. She made the robin from papier mache, the eggs using plaster and many natural materials. I loved it.
I have pictures of the kids too, but I hesitate to put them on here due to the fact that I do not have permission from the parents.
Next week I have "edible" art. That’s going to be a challenge!
I haven’t heard from my son yet but because of a mother’s intuition, I know he is thinking about all this. It’s truly sad, but I am sticking to my guns. It’s sad how a partner truly does not know what true love is.
I pray for them both daily.
Peace,
LYB
“a challenge!” seems a good way to spend summer,..:)

ginger bread castles have them make a story to go with it,.. with only 50 bucks it would probably need to be a group thing,.. if you have access to an oven, it should be easy

I love these! Especially the sub sandwich. You’re bringing back the creativity all the video games and TV has taken away from today’s kids.

great projects by the kids. blake’s parents even had to sign and agree to blake’s photo being taken to be used by an autistic child so he could recognize his classmates. i’m now using that photo as a book mark. take care,

It must be fun to have a job doing what you enjoy doing – and you are such a good teacher. I’m sorry about your DIL. Mine is great to my son and Lilly. She just doesn’t have much to do with me – she’s so busy and has her own mom. But, at least she’s sweet to me. I’m sorry for you and your son. I know he must feel stuck in the middle. Can’t she see what she’s doing?

What creativity! I am very impressed. You Rock!! The bricks from this last run I’ll use in a patio I’m planning out in my mind at this time, and a portion of them I’ll take to the brick swap in September to use as “traders”. I know you can’t help but to worry about your son, but you have your own life to live now… look out for yourself first…

I am having my crew create their own doll houses, next week. I was going to do it with only the girls. My older son, George, got mad. I guess they will use it as a stage for their computer shows.
