I am definitely wanting to apply online to PetSmart, as it’s a decent place to work, and there are several locations around me hiring right now. One small problem. The application process is online, and as of yet they do not have any sort of way to ensure that I will not have a credit check run, as Oregon law states that with few exceptions, employers are not allowed to use a credit check in consideration for hiring, firing, or other disciplinary matters. The store manager I spoke with referred me to PetSmart customer service, who in turn referred me to corporate HR, who referred me back to the damn store manager. At which point I mentally said ‘fuck this’ (pardon my language, I’m a bit frustrated) and placed a phone call with BOLI. Hoping to hear back from them soon. I’m also going to be asking the BOLI representative if it’s legal to require a social security number on a job application, paper or otherwise.

Why don’t you want them running a credit check?

I have NEVER seen a job application that required a social security number. The ONLY documentation in a workplace that should require that is the authorization to run a credit check, a background check, or your W4 once you are hired. If Oregon law says they can’t use a bad credit check as a measure of hiring, then they can’t. That might become applicable as far as placing you in a particular position – such handling money – but otherwise if it’s against state law, they can’t do it.

My bf worked for PetSmart in 2006 and he said that they didn’t do a credit check, only a drug test. They only asked for the social sec # after they hired him, but things may have changed by now. I once had to provide a social security # on an online app in Oregon. I didn’t care for that at all, but they needed to do a background check because it was in child care.
