Sunday Assessment for 12-12-10
Wants:
- Let’s see… Honestly, stop playing StarCraft as much. I’m not enjoying it as much, unless I’m playing with Cliff. I’m reaching a point where finishing a game isn’t as satisfying. I should find other ways to amuse myself.
- Wrap presents.
- Wash my bedsheets. Shut up.
- Eat leftover vindaloo before it goes bad.
- Get to the gym this week, same as last week.
- Sleep better. Take melatonin in spurts if necessary, even if it’s just a placebo effect.
- Clean dust traps in Kelly.
Needs:
- Change oil in car. Yeah. Still.
- Clean room. Yeah. Still. Maybe vacuum, too.
- Install new power supply into Kelly. Probably more of a “want” than a need, but something that will HAVE to get done, and I shouldn’t put off.
What I’ve Accomplished:
- Paid my tuition for next semester.
- Ordered new PSU and more RAM for Kelly. Same exact sticks as initial build, only 100 dollars less. I’d be stupid not to.
- After dragging my feet slightly, identified that it was Kelly’s power supply unit that needed replacing. Hey, disassembling Kelly wasn’t something I was looking forward to.
- Ate Indian food and came home with the girl to watch Home Alone. Tradition maintained.
- Decorated our little tree.
- Bought the girl lots of stuff.
- Ate her.
- Went to the gym 3 times, rather than four, changing up my routine.
- Doing laundry right now, actually.
I remember feeling really down when Kelly wouldn’t turn on that morning. Just, that serious dread of NOT KNOWING what the problem is. The motherboard SHOULD be fine. As for choosing a new PSU, I had a choice between a more expensive corsair PSU, and a cheaper thermaltake. Corsair’s mostly known for their bling RAM, and has gotten good ratings. However… the five-year old replacement PSU in Roxanne is a thermaltake. On newegg, it’s now the cheapest thermaltake PSU available. It gets a a paultry 65% efficiency. NO WONDER my room used to be so warm! Live and learn. This one is up to 88% efficient, good enough for a Plus 80 bronze rating.
Also, I’m slightly worried about the airflow, as this fan will be pulling air “down”, while the general flow of air in my case is back and up. I’ve read from reviews of my case that it ends up not mattering much. The side-fan on the case certainly provides enough air to the CPU for it not to matter much, not to mention the wind-tunnel effect in the middle front of the case. Good quality intake air. This is also my first modular PSU. No more hiding cables in spaces in a case! With my case, everything should be a snap.
I haven’t always been in the mood, but I LOVE watching christmas specials. I hope the girl and I get our fill before the month is over.
On a completely unrelated note, I hear John Boner is due to become speaker of the house. I can hear Jon Stewart and the writers at comedy central all high-fiving at the astronomically easy material. As I’ve said, the day I stop being immature is the day I want someone to smack me.
