Movie Review: Deathly Hallows Part I

No spoilers.

I enjoyed it for what it is, but. There was far too much shaky camerawork. I had to look away from the screen at times. Mind you, I was watching it on a non-3D, non-IMAX screen. The movie seemed to drag at times. I can appreciate the ambience of trying to build up towards a grand finalé, but eh.

Knowing it’s a two-parter, as the second hour of your time in the theatre draws closer, you can’t help but wonder if anything’s actually going to happen. Whether something will happen, whether it’ll leave some cliffhanger a la Matrix Reloaded, or whether it’ll just cut to credits with no explanation.

And, as the girlfriend says, there’s still more stuff left out. Which leaves someone like me, who hasn’t read the books, a little in the dark about certain nuances.

As I said, the movie drags a bit, and it felt like Rowling was channeling a bit of Lord of the Rings. Which isn’t necessarily bad, but it’s there.

Eh. I’ll see the finalé when it’s released, but I have no need to ever see this again.

On as semi-unrelated note, the girl and I watched Star Wars episodes IV, V, and VI when we got home. It’s fun stuff, but seriously, I can still see how I was bored to death with Star Wars when I was little. Too little exposition, too much mind-numbing action that serves no purpose. Yes, I’ll say it: the modern holy trilogy is quite boring at times.

(As opposed to the ‘original’ holy trilogy that is Lord of the Rings. I gotta get around to reading that one of these days.)

I stopped reading Harry potter after the 5th book. I got too sad when Dumbledore died… I will see the movies soon, so I can see how the series finishes… DON’T TELL ME! I agree with you on the Star Wars bit… It was too over the top. It made very little sense to me at times. Well, I hope you have a nice day!!! Miguel.

Oh no 🙁 I’m excited about seeing this (planning on going over the Thanksgiving break) and I ONLY get motion sickness from first person shooters and shaky camera work. That makes me sad… Oh well, guess I’ll have to miss half the movie or ask for an extra popcorn bucket.

I think its moe likely that the script doctor and director were going off on a LOTR tip than Rowling. Nonetheless, something I’ll be looking out for!

My gf read all the books – alot of detail left out which is annoying for anyone who reads the book and then sees a movie based on the book. I love the snake attacks O.o

The book dragged on much longer. They actually did a good job of condensing it believe it or not.
