Daily Recap for 8-1-7
I do best when busy, but running on full sleep. Cutting melatonin into quarters last night worked splendidly. Maybe I’ll try cutting the quarters into 8ths and seeing if there’s any effect. I want sleep tonight. Period.
Maybe my two-week break-in period was a little overstated. Maybe that “experience” stuff counts for something. My GM noted how fast I was adapting on my second day. I remember when I started at Panera. Actually, most of the sandwiches and things weren’t that hard to find. Oh. I suppose that’s the difference. The bakery menu for Panera had a whole bunch of shit. You had to learn the names of them. In addition, there was an assortment of sauces you had to memorize that went on each sandwich. I had them all memorized.
Taco Bell relies on shorthands down to one letter. It’s annoying as hell at first, and a complete pain to reread receipts. Though, that’s partly because the register system is one screen and not two. We supposedly had a busy lunch today, but it felt relatively light compared to Panera.
Ah, to be a retail whore. I can see why Joe likes his job, even though it’s Taco Bell. I’m still getting over the “My god, I’m working in fast food” thing. That’s all mental. The thing is, there is a lot of downtime. Maybe there’s things I’m not seeing yet that I have to do, but. Panera had downtime between 3-4 PM. There was generally a steady inflow of customers. Hrm. Maybe it’s because Taco Bell does 65% of its business through drive-thru. :: shrugs :: Well, at least I won’t have to answer the phone.
Fourth day. I thought my feet would have adapted by now.
I was thinking about hours. When I give in my actual hours for school, I should say that me closing is a bad idea. Coming in at 11, I can get up at 6:30, hit the gym, and be home a little after 10. Today, I was able to eat, and have a little time to lay down for ten minutes. I NEED downtime.
Where was I? I’m on the schedule now, and I noticed I’m on for the next four days. That’ll make six days in a row. Ah, this takes me back. What’s extra-funny is I still have all my Panera-related stuff. I have a shirt with a logo on it, an apron, khakis, a hat, and a NAMETAG. My nametag ruled.
No wait, that wasn’t what I wanted to annotate.
Right, I was on my feet until 6 PM. Came home, ate, and managed to not even finish what I was eating. I’m not sure how. I was late for meeting up with Becki. I gave her a printed spreadsheet of the workout I was giving her. Her squats look just fine, form-wise. She asked about knees-over-toes. I said knees-in-line-with-toes is more important. Her hips weren’t rising faster than her knees, never noticed her back being anything but neutral. She said she was having issues sitting down to pee after what I did to her last week. She also said she likes being sore.
Score, I have a convert! I swear, cardio is so fucking mind-numbing in comparison to lifting. She also made the observation that all the people in the cardio room are overweight or out of shape, whereas the people in the weight room seem to have the better bodies. It’s a curious observation, even I really don’t know what to make of it.
She did good today, I was impressed. What I like about this little workout I gave her is that there’s minimal equipment. Bodyweight squats, bodyweight step-ups, bodyweight supine rows, and bodyweight push-ups. Only things that require equipment are lat pulls (or assisted pull-ups) and one-arm shoulder presses. That’s simple and easy to accomplish. They’re also exercises that are taxing, but relatively easy to do. There’s no bent-over positions yet. Step-ups are an underrated posterior chain builder. And they’re taxing as hell. She was spent prior to the third set, so I let her get away with 12. I’m nice, I swear.
I might get asked, so this is the workout – I did something similar to this on Monday and today to make sure it would be good.
- (DB Front) Squat
Assisted Pull-ups
Step-ups
One-Arm Shoulder Press
Supine Row
Incline Push-up
Rest between exercises: 60 seconds
Sets: 3
Reps: 15
Done as alternating sets – squat, rest 60 seconds, pull-ups, rest 60 seconds, squat.. etc.
My feet hurt, but by the time I was downstairs, I didn’t notice as much. I should give this routine to my dad. Maybe, depends. I’d rather him get into more posterior chain exercises. Hrm. I thinking deadlifts from the floor, either barbell or dumbbell, bulgarian split squats, and step-ups. His legs suck, I swear. I wonder if he’d actually do a routine like that with any intensity. That’s the problem with my dad. No intensity. I know Becki’s going to do the routine full-throttle. I have no problem if she cuts on the rest periods. I does get harder as you add more outside resistance.
Maybe..
Deadlift
Incline Press
Bulgarian Split Squat
Row
Step-ups
Swiss-Ball Crunch
Hrm. He’s a point where an A/B split would work well. But only if he lifts three times a week.
I should also encourage my dad to lift three times a week. Ha ha. Like that’ll ever happen. We’ll see. OH. He started taking glucosamine. He said within a week, all his knee pain went away. At least he heard me there, for once.
Anyway. Hrm. Damn, it’s almost 10 PM? Where does the time go. I should start mentally getting ready for bed. Sleep is important.
OH. And I agreed to actually lift next week with Becki. Though, that usually means meeting up, doing your own thing, and then leaving together. Pity it’ll end up being my A workout. But the week after that, I should be gunning for deadlifting 215 for 3×10.
Ah, the things I care about that nobody gives a shit about. I’ll go pee now. Because I love peeing.
In recap: Got up early, ate, lifted, ate, worked 7 hours and got a free taco salad because it was my ‘day off’, came home, ate, made Becki all sweaty at the gym, and am currently relaxing in front of Roxanne. But where’s the fun in just posting a single sentence? Hrmmmmmmm.
I have officially had it with fast food, but I hope Taco Bell works out for you. ~

i loved working at subway once i got the indian girls off my back. at evening shift leader, i got to train all the newbies. for some reason our location got a monsterous lunch crew, and a very mild dinner crew. the best part was if the newbie happened to have brought some pot. we’d get high in the back. then a customer would come in, and everything was funny. definitely some of the mostcarefree days of my life.
