Oh baby, let the circus begin!

http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Trial_of_Saddam_Hussein_to_be_televised

You know, I typically avoid news. But this makes me very, very excited.

Hussein’s strategy for defense was outlined by defense team member Abdul Haq al-Ani, as reported by Dan Senor, as consisting of four “pillars”:
  • The first argues that the invasion of Iraq was illegal and as such, Saddam Hussein is still legally president. If so, then under the Saddam era constitution he is entitled to immunity.
  • The second suggests that Hussein’s alleged war crimes were no different than George W. Bush’s response to 9/11: A response to insurrection.
  • The third pillar is to call Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Donald Rumsfeld to testify. It will attempt to highlight the support the United States gave to Iraq in the 1980s.
  • The fourth will be to present an unflattering portrayal of American foreign policy.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Saddam’s a nice guy. He was a bastard! Under most religions he’s got himself a nice ticket to hell. But as much as he’s a bastard, you can’t deny the hypocrisy surrounding the allegations against him. As some like to say, “He was our bastard!”

Under UN charter, it’s next to impossible to invade any other country. Or declare. Oh wait, the US gave the UN lip service and did what it wanted to do anyway. What still kills me is that we kept calling it a war when congress hasn’t declared war since Dubya Dubya Two. *smacks forehead* I’m not saying the UN is the greatest thing in the world. But if you can’t even follow your own constitution, c`mon.

The second pillar ingenius. Draw parallels between Saddam’s regime and the PATRIOT Act. To spell it out, the PATRIOT Act violates the fourth and sixth amendments. Let’s look at them for a moment.

    Amendment IV:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

In other words, you need a warrant before you can be arrested. You can not be detained without a viable reason.

    Amendment VI:
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense.

A fair trial.

Sigh. How can some people be so blind to how wrong the PATRIOT Act is? Our Bill of Rights was put there to protect us. Some people are too quick to give up their freedom.

Anyway, I’ve digressed. Third pillar is quite right. Saddam’s been on the cover of TIME. As a good guy! We supported Iraq! Oh yes. That’s no secret. We supplied them with weapons. And chemical weapons.

Fourth pillar is what I’ve already mentioned. American foreign policy has become a joke. We were almost respectable under Clinton. How would you feel if some shmuck from a big and powerful country said, “Bring`em on.” Other countries may not identify citizens with governments the way we do, but I don’t know anybody from outside of the US that thinks Bush is a swell guy. That’s embarassing, far more than any blowjob. For the last time, I don’t give a shit about a president’s personal life.

Is it any wonder why I avoid the news? I mean, all news. I don’t watch TV. I don’t read the newspaper much. Tends to be the same shit over and over again. Don’t really read much online, either. Maybe I’ll read something somebody’s posted on OD. I know it’s not the best ‘intellectual’ approach, but I tend to rely on word of mouth. I didn’t know there was another earthquake until someone told me. See. If it’s that important, it’ll reach me.

I guess it’s because there’s such sadness in the world now. Was the world really this bad ten years ago? 1995 was a good time. Devils won the Stanley Cup. And otherwise, there was.. a good feeling about the world. What happened? Could it really be that as soon as there’s a Republican Administration it all goes to hell? Or is it that the world really is going to hell and Bush got caught with his pants down? Who knows. Maybe an arrogent dumbass was exactly what we needed.

I realize that’s strange for me to say. What would I have done, the average armchair politician? I see a problem with having so many troops spread across the globe. ..For what, exactly? I see a problem with millions and millions going to Israel every year. Hey, what about us?

And that’s really it, right there. The propaganda proliferated in my mind for a long time. It wasn’t until Bush was elected that I lost all faith in government. Clinton made me believe that there was hope in the world. He didn’t bring peace to the middle east. But he tried, damn it. I’ll forever be puzzled by the constant bombings of Iraq throughout the 90’s, but somethings I’ll never understand. I could rationalize some things. But then after Bush stole the election, I predicted he’d eventually go invade Iraq. Republicans have a hard-on for that area of Mesopotamia I hate when I’m right.

There’s something else going on, something that won’t be revealed for a long time. I realize I’ve become a bit of a conspiracy theorist, but I can’t help it. Nothing makes sense, except for the worst-case scenarios.

Might as well bring it up.

If anybody can find me a single picture of a plane hitting the pentagon, or flying over the freeway, or any plane wreckage outside of the pentagon, I’d be happy to vote Republican in the next election. That’s right. If you can find proof that we did not fire on the Pentagon, I will vote Republican in the next election. Anybody else find it curious how the passenger list of the planes that hit the twin towers was quick to appear – but nobody ever mentioned the plane that hit the Pentagon. Where’s the videos? It irks the fuck out of me.

I was in an extreme minority that day. My sister thought I was out-of-touch with reality for thinking we shouldn’t go bomb some random people who had nothing to do with anything. *shakes head* It was like watching a movie and wanting to shake people NO, NO, DON’T BELIEVE IT! It was too suspicious. Why did the towers fall so perfectly? Why would every level under it collapse so perfectly? The entire structure is constantly supporting the levels over it. Why would the 50th floor (for example) suddenly decide to give way? I’ll never understand it.

So instead, we bomb people. America whips its IMPERIALPENISOFFREEDOM out and cocksmacks some people who don’t even know what HDTV or html or ipods or Universal Health Care or hybrid cars are. *shakes head* Waste. What a goddamn waste. Just think for a moment if we took all the manpower and capital that went into invading Baghdad and put it towards building something in within our own borders. To having a fleet ready when Katrina hit. To going forth and building that school that some poor city district needs. To doing stem-cell research so maybe my mom’s mind won’t degrade so quickly. We have the most resources of any country on the planet, and this is the best thing we can think of doing?

Once and again.. WHAT ABOUT US?!!

“he’s an SOB, but he’s our SOB” – Donald Rumsfeld about Saddam Hussien this entry was brilliant. there really isn’t much i can comment on because i nodded my head to just about everything you said. as to the pentagon, i’ve seen the video speculating that it was a missile and not a plane, and i have to say the lack of footage of a plane is rather…intriguing.

You really ought to keep up on the news, to be a well-informed citizen and such. But y’know, I agree that most outlets suck at it — they take a narrow view, or they parrot back what their sources say without any skepticism or interpretation. I’d tell anyone who wants to be well-informed to watch The Daily Show, believe it or not — you get the important stories, and they cut through the crap.

Timmy For President.

Urgh. Lately I’ve avoided the news like the plague. It only depresses me. 🙁
