Timmy go STABBY.

I give up. Fifteen hundred bucks down the drain. I’m ready to take a sledgehammer and smash it all to bits. I’m about ready to declare Roxanne a stillborn. This is fucked up.

Is it the power supply? When I flip the switch, the light behind the button is on. That’s something. The keyboard will light up once, leading me to believe the motherboard isn’t dead. If I hit the power button on Roxanne, all the fan lights will light up once. Once. No fans will spin.

I unplugged the ATX power supply to the motherboard and set out to see if any power was reaching the molexes. Using a power tester, I set it to the lowest setting DC. That way, if anything happened, I’d see it. I tried every combination, but nothing happened. Using the diagram from the motherboard manual, I tried to test the main atx plug itself. Nothing. The only way I get any response from the power tester is if I set it to ohms (which is resistance), for which I get a consistent reading of 0. (Meaning, no resistance; a circuit is completed.)

If I had another power supply, I’d test it that way. (I’d rather not go fucking with my parent’s computer. Though. I’m tempted to test the molexes on it, just as a control subject. It DOES work, after all.) There are so many components, it is probably just one thing. I even used a short on the hd light and the main power light. Why? Because there are no lights on the front of the case. But, no, shorting those didn’t do anything.

Just about the only thing I haven’t tried is resetting the CMOS. Thing is, I don’t even know what “CMOS” stands for, or means. I’m guessing it’s something related to the BIOS. But the BIOS won’t even load! So I’d rather not touch that.

Oh, the video card came today. Who says they don’t deliver on President’s Day? I took my LCD out of it’s box and.. it looks rather sexy.

Unfortunately, it gave me a huge headache when I tried to put it back into the styrofoam. I’d rather not go into that.

Anyway, after realizing that I haven’t a fucking clue what I’m doing, I was quite angry. Thing is, there isn’t even any room in my room to kick a wall. There isn’t! There’s not a single open spot on the wall.

So, I did the next best thing.

Unfortunately, hate begets hate, and I just wanted to start breaking stuff. I knew I should have paid attention to those warnings.

What do I do now? I just don’t know.

Look at the book that came with the mobo (I assume one came with it) and double check all the jumpers. The mobo comes with jumpers set at defaults that have to be set correctly for it to work. It is probably a jumper somewhere that needs to be set correctly. Do not despair. You can do this.

Ummm – CMOS is usually a semiconductor used in cameras and other light-sensitive devices. When you turn on a CPU is has a built-in address it jumps to to begin execution of machine language. This location is where BIOS is. BIOS (basic input output system) lets the cpu bootstrap into the operating system. You usually reach it with Esc or a function key during intial boot following POST. Complimentary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor- it’s what chips are made out of. (my husband told me that.) hope this helps in some small way.

CMOS: Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor – simply a technology used to fabricate transistors; million of them, on a die. The metal can be tungsten or lately, copper. Did the system ever POST? You don’t mention if you ever got any video. Although if the fans won’e even spin up (DC fans?) then it’s the ATX power supply.

This is one of the reasons I’m leary of building boxes from scratch anymore. That makes me sound old, I know, but for what it’s worth (and I’m not saying ‘I told you so’), but I’m am looking forward with relief to just plugging my new mac in when it gets here. I no longer have the patience for what you’re dealing with. I would smash all the stuff to bits, you see. 🙁

http://www.powerstream.com/itx-atx-pinout.htm Note – this is a ‘quasi-standard’ atx pinout. If your atx is compliant to this standard, pin 14 must be grounded for the supply to turn on.

So when do we get to see pictures of Timmy? Sorry about the computer issues. 🙁 That kind of thing makes me want to kill someone.

Fuuuuuck, that bites. Do you have an aversion to styrofoam? I have serious issues with it (the squeaking sound it makes causes me almost physical pain when I hear it, and I get goosebumps all over and generally run away; I suspect it’s because I can detect higher pitched noises than most people.) I’ve never met anyone else who had a problem with styrofoam, which is why I ask.

Did it beep? I know almost nothing about the inside workings of computers, but the three times that my motherboard died, it didn’t beep when it booted up (the processor coming on, so they said).
