What Is A Patriot?

I considered this question yesterday, and it was deceptively easy to answer.

A patriot is someone, who if his or her country was invaded by a powerful enemy, would stand and fight rather than fleeing.

No more, no less. Bombing your enemies into oblivion does not make you a patriot. Waving a miniature American flag does not make you a patriot. Pointing at innocent citizens and calling them a “communist” or a “terrorist” does not make you a patriot. Proclaiming how great your nation is does not make you a patriot. Nor does pointing out it’s flaws.

It’s that simple, I think. If our supposed enemy invaded mainland, I’d grab a shotgun and go guerilla on their ass. I just hope we get a better government soon before I start calling myself a patriot of Canada. Hey, Canada’s a pretty nice place, it’s starting to get embrassing to call myself an American based on our government’s actions.

Addendum: Hey, I never said I could get it in one shot. The logic of the definition posted above means, even in Nazi Germany, we’d defend Germany against the Allies, because we love Germany that much. I like the sentiment of the noter who said, “A Patriot loves his/her country enough to even fight against it’s own government.” The key is that our government is not our nation. Of course, I still can’t justify why anybody should hail allegiance to any country.

Addendum 2: Actually, completely disregard this entry. It was a thought I felt like sharing. So I did. So I was a little off. So be it. People take me too seriously, sometimes.

A Patriot loves his/her country enough to even fight against it’s own government. Dont go to Canada.

I want to be a Canadian. That would be cool. A friend from Canada said girls there can go topless.

If Timmy was keeping America in check, there’d be a whole lot less dying and a whole lot more nakedness. September 11th could be the National Day of Rememberance Through Nudity. Show those dirty terrorists they can’t keep us down or clothed!!

And snuggling likes you.

sure, i’d move to canada… like, Yellowknife or something. *gasp* that would rule…. not as awesome as iceland, but close. ryn: weird opinion. most people afraid of guns are the people who want them banned. but whatever. i guess you’re pretty reasonable afterall, naked boy.

I lean more to the Socialist spectrum of politics, my parents keeping telling me to move to Europe. I might have actually done that, except over half of Europe is in the UN.

Eh, Canada has as many problems as we do, they just hide it better. <3

nearly half… more like nearly ALL

So if you were a German in the 1940’s, and the Allies were on their way, a good patriot would fight them? Too simple, Timmy. Sometimes governments deserve to be attacked and overthrown.

I agree whole-heartedly with Zomby. Our government sucks, and it needs to be overthrown. I show no patriotism to the government. The country may be another story, but I’m not too sure… I don’t like most of the people I’ve met in America…

I think whoever doesn’t like America should leave *ducks* LOL!!!

Fake patriotism pisses me off. After 9/11, everybody had to have flags all over everything, a flag on every house, and shame on your for being the only one in the neighborhood without one. Me, I think if I was that into flag-waving, I would’ve had one before 9/11, right?

Standing and fighting a foreign invader does not make you a Patriot, it makes you a survivor. A Patriot attends the war protests and actively denounces the empire his government is creating.
