Get Your Hands Off My Uterus!!!

You know, I really don’t understand the whole abortion rights issue. Yes, I’m aware that I’m insensitive, closed-minded, stupid, and quite possibly a Bible-thumper because of this, but I honestly don’t understand why some women get so insanely infuriated over this.

What prompted my pondering of this was the fact that I heard a few tidbits of “speeches” that were given at yesterday’s Pro-Choice rally/march/whatever-you-want-to-call-it (which was actually more of a rally for anyone who hates Bush in order to make their numbers appear to be larger).

One woman was yelling about how conservatives DO want small government. In fact, she said, they want government so small that it will fit in “your” uterus (not quite sure how to take that, or if I should get grossed out over it).

Another woman was a little beyond the yelling stage. She was screaming at the top of her lungs, “Get your hands off of my uterus!!!” The hate and rage in her voice made her sound more like someone who was confronting a priest who raped her rather than someone who is simply a Pro-Choice activist.

Anyhow, the main thing that I caught, and found rather strange, was how they kept referring to the issue as “reproductive health.”

First, I think that’s just a politically correct way of saying something in order to make people feel better about it. It’s like calling a garbage man a “sanitation engineer” or a cashier a “sales associate.” Calling abortion “reproductive health” is simply an attempt to distance the term as far as possible with anything that could make it be seen as murder, like the Pro-Lifer’s call it.

Second, and this is what I found rather amusing, is that the term “reproductive health” is something given to a procedure intended to stop the reproductive process. The whole point of having an abortion is to keep a woman from reproducing and stopping the reproductive process once it’s started.

So yeah, I was mildly amused by the highlights that I caught from their little march yesterday, and I’m just as convinced as ever that marches like that really do nothing to change people’s minds or change any public policy.

Just as a side-note here, let me beat anyone to the punch who wants to start sticking me with the people who bomb abortion clinics. Just because I don’t understand why some women are so pissed off about this doesn’t make me a Pro-Lifer, because I’m not. Nor am I Pro-Choice. To be honest, I really don’t care either way. It doesn’t affect me, so I honestly don’t care if it’s legal or outlawed.

“You spoonfed us Saturday morning mouthfuls of maggots
and lies, disguised in your sugary breakfast cereals.
These plates you made us clean were filled with your fears.
These things have hardened in our soft, pink bellies.
We are what you have made us.
We have grown up watching your television.
We are a symptom of your Christian America,
the biggest Satan of all.
This is your world in which we grow.
And we will grow to hate you.”

well, if you get a tooth pulled, it falls under the heading of ‘dental health’, no? also, I disagree with your point about the attendees being Bush-haters who want to ‘make their numbers appear larger’. my understanding is that there were lots of Republicans, Catholics, and other generally right-aligned people supporting abortion rights at that rally.

I remember the bad times when abortions were illegal. There weren’t any less of them then than there are now-they were just more dangerous. I saw two friends through abortions within a month of each other-it wasn’t a good experience for me or them. I saw you on the front page and just wanted to add my two cents.

and I appreciate your sharing your opinions, even though I don’t agree with any of them 😉 take care,

it’s a woman’s choice and no man in a suit should be able to make us revert to back-alley abortions. other than that, im all for abortions because i also happen to think they help decrease the numbers of stupid people in the world. but.. thats an entirely different topic.

oh and one of my friends from work actually drove out there with her women’s group to march with them. 40 hour drive, one way, on a bus. dang.

Actually, Catholics for a Free Choice had a pretty large turn out. And you know those Catholics. The issue goes beyond abortion, it is about the government taking rights away from the people it’s supposed to serve.

Found you on the front page — I disagree with your “rally for anyone who hates Bush” remark, because these people obviously really do care about the topic they’re screaming about. That aside, I agree about marches. I think people go to them because they want to feel useful — like they’re doing something to further their cause, even though they really just make public fools of themselves.

Continued from previous note — Personally, I think that abortion should be something personal between a woman and whatever deity she believes in. I support abortion for rape victims, incest cases, and things like that, but as for the common ‘whoops I got pregnant’ woman, I think that the government should just take a huge step back.

Its “reproductive health” because if we outlaw abortions, women will start dying in back alleys with coat hangers stuffed in them. We have to keep abortions legal to keep desperate women alive. Think of it as a methadone clinic. I don’t like abortions. But I think they’re a necessary evil. Well, 1st trimester at least. If you don’t have it done by the 3rd, it doesn’t need to be done.

In the short time I’ve been reading you, I have never considered you either closed-minded or stupid. Quite the opposite. I don’t get the whole abortion thing, either, and I don’t pay much attention to it. My only thought is that abortion is NOT birth control.

Why Jaimie, I never knew you had a uterus… hehe, now I’m off to read.

I don’t talk about abortion. It’s just not something I want to get into. Ick. Another complicated issue.
