Marriage
Ever since about three weeks or so ago when the engine in my truck blew up at work, and they ended up giving me the beater, Ive been listening to a lot of talk radio. This is mainly because the music stations sound like crap on the crappy speakers in the crappy truck I drive now.
It seems like everything on the two main stations I listen to are either world events or politics (which many times blend together over and over during the on-air discussions).
I dont consider myself a very political person. Yes, I do have my views on things, but I dont care enough about other people, or the political/governing system, to really voice my opinions. I find myself having many views in common with people like Rush Limbaugh (which I suppose would label me as a conservative), Joe Soucheray, Jason Lewis, and the like. I do have periodical disagreements with what they think and say, but that isnt often.
The reason I said that is because I was listening yesterday to a bit of a debate about something that has the liberals here in MN flying from the rafters; the Minnesota legislature is considering removing protection for gays and lesbians from the MN Human Rights Act, which would mean that employers (including the state) wouldnt be required to provide any of the benefits to homosexuals that it provides for married couples (such as health and dental insurance, etc).
This conversation quickly got onto the whole gay marriage thing. The host of the show (Jason Lewis) gave his opinion about the reasons he thinks gay marriages dont need to be made legal, but probably will. He also took calls from lefties who were outraged that he would think that, and pulled the whole Who are you to tell me how to live? lines that seem to be one of the most often used line by people like that.
So I formed my own opinion, and this is what I think. I think marriage of every type, doesnt need to exist. I dont think people who chose to co-habitate or raise a family together should get certain privileges (like tax credits) or other incentives just because theyve signed a piece of paper stating that they are married. I also think that by doing this it would put the gays and straights on level ground, and thus give them one less thing to piss and moan about.
Why do away with the institution of marriage? Because it is becoming more and more of a failure with each passing day. Divorce rates are the highest theyve ever been, and keep going up. So why get married? Would you get on a plane that has a 50/50 chance of crashing? Probably not. And yet so many people are willing to climb onto the plane of marriage, not usually planning for it to fail (which is really just a nice way to say that they dont have what it takes to be married in the first place), but it so often does.
So whats the point of marriage?
I know, the whole doing things Gods way argument, but Ive heard that, dont believe it, and dont need to go into that. Divorce rates are just as high with Christians as with the heathen, so maybe the Christians should stop getting married to (and then they wouldnt be forced to break vows that they make before the God they profess to believe in).
Some would say to be committed to someone and love someone and raise a family with someone and on and on and on. But people can, and have, done that and are doing that totally outside of the title of being married. You dont need a ceremony or a license to do any of those things.
Personally, I like the idea Stephen King had in his book (which was later made into an Arnold Schwartzenegger movie that totally was nothing like the book. Big surprise) The Running Man. It was a story of the future, and in the future people had marriage contracts. Thus, they would be married for the specified length of time, be it 10 years or 2 months, and then would walk away with no further obligation.
I know that getting rid of marriage would tremendously hurt the finances of lawyers and preists/pastors all over, but so what? Who cares about lawyers anyways? Let them get a job that does something constructive. And what about the priests/pastors? Well if God is really there and takes care of his people, let God deal with the problem.
Well, this wasnt really what I planned to talk about tonight, but I suppose its something to read. Hope you had fun.
Met a girl, thought she was grand
Fell in love, found out first hand
Went well for a week or two
Then it all came unglued
*
She fuckin hates me
She fuckin hates me
I tried too hard and she tore my feelings like I had none
And ripped them away
*
She was Queen for about an hour
After that, the shit got sour
She took all I ever had
No sign of guilt, no feeling of bad
*
She fuckin hates me
She fuckin hates me
I tried too hard and she tore my feelings like I had none
And ripped them away- Puddle Of Mud
hmmm. *scratches head* very interesting indeed:)

I’m totally inclined to agree with you; marriage is totally passe by now that in overall society families can exist (even if they are looked down upon by-say, Christians?) without the institution of marriage. Besides that I don’t need a piece of paper saying that I love my boyfriend and we’ll be committed for life. Stupid. If you need that to solve things you have more problems than a marriage

can solve. I probably will get married again but I know that it’s not necessary; many people think that if they get married it’ll magically make things ‘better’. It SO does not; I speak from experience! I agree with what you are saying though wholeheartedly. I couldn’t have said it better myself. THank you for this. *hugs*
