New Things – and none of them mine

My friend Lauren’s had her first grandchild. A little boy with a fashionably unusual name – born by Caesarean after a struggle with nature and forceps. All was well in the end and grandmum, mum and baby are all doing well.

I’ve got a new laptop. Not mine, unfortunately. One of the young people I work with put in a successful funding bid for equipment and part of it was a brand spanking new Macbook Pro. It arrived today and I brought it home to play with. It’s all running and is very pretty. Aren’t Macs clever? They just do things without making any fuss at all. Pity Windows doesn’t run as smoothly.

My own computer’s got a new lease of life. Three weeks ago I somehow caused it to lose vital drivers (all I did was try to restore to the previous day) and it wouldn’t start up at all.   I couldn’t repair Windows with the disk and I didn’t want to lose all my millions of files so I packed it off to an expert. I have zillions of files on my computer; most of which I shall never open again, but I still didn’t want to lose a single one of them. Anyway, it’s all good again (thank heavens!).

My next-door neighbour is newly widowed. They were a lovely couple and always looked out for me. He used to do things like mow my lawn when he did his and she’d invite me over for the odd evening just out of kindness. Despite being a couple, they realised that being single is lonely sometimes. He died last week. Every February, for the last five years, someone close to me has died. I hate Februarys (Februaries?).

I do have one new thing of my own… possibly. A seminal moment… maybe. Not ready to talk about that yet, though.

Oh, I hope it’s a very GOOD moment. I curse the day I fell into the PC cult. I’d go back in time and do a Mac if I could.

*IT Hat On* Even though your computer is working again, don’t think that your files are safe if you don’t have a separate backup of them. Hard disks have a habit of dying without warning. Burn your important stuff to CD or DVD. Better yet, burn your important stuff to CD or DVD *twice*. *IT Hat Off* Carry on 🙂

Isn’t it funny how you refuse to let go of things that you know you don’t need? People are so strange… all material things and possesions.

A seminal moment!!! I’m waiting with bated breath. …

What’s the fashionably unusual name? Star is having her second boy next week and I’m dreading her name choice. Any good suggestions gratefully received!

ryn: thanks! I’ve been through a spate of deaths in my wider circle in the past 6 years or so. I am hopeful there will be a hiatus soon. It’s the thing about aging they neglected to mention to us. I think I want my money back! My next computer is going to be a Mac.

RYN thank you. I hope the moment is memorabe……… we all need those.

I hope you have a good new thing. I have a PC…don’t know the difference…don’t know how I’d handle the learning curve to Mac.

Yes, Macs ‘”just do things without making any fuss at all” until they become completely indispensable – and then they break down! (Speaking from very recent experience here!!) I’m glad your computer’s files were quickly restored; it’s awful to consider that some precious computer content could be lost, isn’t it! “A seminal moment ….maybe” sounds fascinating – and tantalising. I hope it happens and that then, one day, you are ready to write about it.

Your boy is 18! That’s what I’m talking about. Had you not mentioned his age I would have read a note about him and had him in my mind around the age of 14. I’m sorry your Feb’s are difficult. But all in all you sound well, and I’m intrigued by the mention of the guy, Ray. I hope he is good to you. Thanks for your note.
