Sunday Afternoon

It’s boring, but it’s an entry.

Today was Sunday, the one day of the week that I generally reserve for myself. But not today!

Son wandered downstairs at around 11.00.am – which, to him, is first thing – and asked if I wanted to spend some time with him.

Sucker? Yes, of course I did.

We spent all afternoon on his homework. Analysing balance sheets and deciding where he should invest his pretend £10,000. Ratios, percentages, trends, factors and lots of numbers mixed together with recommendations and strategies.

The awful thing was, I quite enjoyed it. Many years ago, pre-kids, part of my job was analysing accounts and giving credit (or not) to companies. Son was totally amazed that I was able to help him relatively easily and that I knew what he was talking about. Some things don’t change despite being prettied up by Windows.

Mark Twain, I think… anyway, it fits:

“When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years."

I’m into quotes at the moment. I just emailed my timesheet into work for next week and as I never have any content to the email – the timesheet is an attachment – I add a quote to it, just because. Today’s:

"There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home."  Ken Olson, 1977, Digital Equipment Corporation.

Katie’s maths homework (at the age of 13) is way beyond me now!!!

It’s great that you and your son could share that.

Wow, I’m very impressed that not only can you handle balance sheets, you can do predictions, trends etc. I imagine your son was impressed, too! (Even if he didn’t show it?)Oh, I love that quote by Ken Olson! I wonder if he is still alive, has it quoted at him, and squirms! (As an aside: the “squirm”reminded me: may I point out that my computer at times makes typing errors completely of its ownvolition and they have nothing at all to do with me! And no way am I going to admit that I didn’t check my note on your last entry either before or after I hit “Leave Note”)

RYN: No, not even Crazy Cat Lady me could cope with more than two cats, I’d actually prefer just one. And the two adult cats have priority over the kits. Moral, aren’t I! Besides, it’s a hundred times easier to find a home for a kitten than for a full-grown cat!
