triumph

there’s nothing so sweet
as accomplishing a task
they say can’t be done
and watch the impossible
appear right before one’s eyes

This will be my last poem posted before Ayeka and I leave on our vacation. (We’ll be gone through May 7th, so don’t fret about my silence.)

I’ve been working on a problem at the office, which is a failing in the Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) system that we extend for our client. You see, the search capabilities out of the box aren’t so wonderful – they can do a lot of things, but there’s huge swaths of the system that can’t be searched or found when you’re using it. Fine. So my project has been to use their application programming interface (API) to build a replacement.

The first version went just fine – I’ve done this before on a more wide scale, so this just required a bit more finesse to get it to do what we wanted. And then there were massive changes to go looking for portions of the system that still were unfindable.

Specifically – they wanted me to look for workflows, which aren’t indexed the same way as everything else in the system. Great. (I mean, if I’m looking for specific documents in our system, I can narrow it by and large by MIME type and find the proper kind that way. This specific type of object is very system-specific and isn’t quite a document per se.) Add to it the fact that there is no specific document-type for a workflow…

What I ended up figuring out last night was that they “hid” the type – they don’t want you mucking with it directly, so they didn’t document the information to actually even find it. I did, finally, end up finding the information and making a very elegant kludge to get it to work.. so this morning, everyone’s celebrating in my office.

Or, as I’ve said before, “I am mighty!!”

Ooh, I love that one.. Would it be okay if I printed it out and put it over my desk for motivational purposes?

As long as credit is given where credit is due, certainly. 🙂 (I have no problems with boosts to my ego like that. 😉 )

Of course! It is quite an ego boost, finding fame on a wall across the ocean…
