Hope

While Arab gunmen and Israeli soldiers shot and killed each other in Lebanon these past weeks, Muslim girls wore their headscarves, Jewish boys their yarmulkes, and headed for classes in my school. No insults were hurled, only smiles as they ate lunch together. I wanted to videotape this scene and mail it to the UN. The student population at my school is the most diverse in San Antonio, due largely to the attraction of the medical field. However, not all of our students will go into medicine or even have an interest in health occupations. Some applied at our campus to escape the monstrous high schools in their attendance zone. Some applied because of our reputation for diversity. Children aren’t born prejudiced, they must be carefully taught. May they never master that curriculum.

I agree. It is a learned trait, unfortunately. We are groomed from the day we are born and neither we nor our parents really realize what they’ve done.

Ohhh, you wrote that very effectively. Children can teach a lot to the world.

ryn: well you simply HAVE to GO. don’t cha think? That really says something about your influence there.

Amen. I love that song from South Pacific: “it’s got to be drummed in your dear little ears/you’ve got to be carefully taught….”
