My Little Pie Makers
One of the many joys of being a grandparent is baking with your grandchildren. Last weekend Kayla came over to the house and we spent the evening making pumpkin bread. I would measure, and Kayla would add and stir. Each time she would add a new ingredient the question would follow, "Can I lick the bowl Nana?" She cracks me up! Three loafs of pumpkin bread later, she sat at the kitchen table with a spoon and the bowl licking the bowl.
Today she bounces through the door and inquires, "Are we making pie?" We repeated the process again and when the day was done, we had two beautiful pumpkin pies. He brother cheered her on from the top of the island with a wisk and bowl in hand. Her momma snapped pictures and kept little fingers out of the bowl. We laughed, talked about the Elf on the Shelf named Herbie that came to live at their home this week, and how beautiful her Christmas tree is. When her pie was in the oven, she helped me bake cornbread for my stuffing. Again came that question, "Can I lick the bowl?" I tried to explain that the cornbread bowl was’t exactly one you would want to lick, but she wasn’t buying. I went in to the cupboard to put away a few items and when I returned there stood Kayla with a grimace on her face…..guess she knows that the cornbread bowl really doesn’t taste like the pumpkin bread bowl.
Jaxon loved watching, but within thirty minutes landed in his grandpa’s lap to be rocked to sleep. Poor little dude is teething and trying to fend off the last vestiges of a virus. My bet is that he will enjoy pie eating a lot more that he did pie making. I love the time spent with them.
Tomorrow will bring Thanksgiving, and Mike and I look forward to seeing Sam. He and his parents will join Mike and I for dinner. I fully plan to spend some time loving on that boy. Kayla , Jax, and their parents will spend time with Nana Cheri, but we will see them on Friday, and we will hang out and clean up the leftovers. I love the holidays and the time spent with our family. I am truly blessed!
