Sophomore: Loves Hugs and Shopping

“Miranda? IS THAT YOU??” I screamed as I spotted my old friend through the crowds of people.

“Megan, oh my God!! What’s up girl? Come here and give me a hug!”

I raced towards her and we hugged like we hadn’t seen each other in years. Even though it was only three months since I had seen her last, I felt so happy to finally see a familiar face. Decked out in cutoff shorts and a bright yellow T-shirt, Miranda was one of the orientation leaders for the volleyball tournament.

“Hey, cutie, how’ve you been?” I heard another voice and turned.

“NATE!” I yelled, smiling. He came over and gave me the biggest hug, lifting me up.

I had just arrived on campus not more than ten minutes before. The hot August afternoon sun baked down on the crowds of people playing volleyball, listening to music (the local radio station was broadcasting live) and I had managed to spot a few of my friends.

“So when did you get here? Are you moved in yet? How was your summer?” Miranda asked me, laughing, putting her arm around me.

“I just got here about ten minutes ago, Melanie still isn’t here yet. I have to carry in all my junk up to my dorm room, we’re on the 8th floor this year!” I answered quickly.

“Cool, well call me later when you guys get all settled in. I’m sure there’s tons of stuff going on tonight, since it’s the first weekend of college!” She answered as her group pulled her over to the volleyball pit. “I gotta run, talk to you later!”

I smiled and waved, and turned to head back to my car. I had managed to get a great spot right next to the front door. I spent the entire afternoon hauling boxes and laundry baskets full of my life’s possesions up to my 8th floor room. Soon Melanie and her parents arrived, and we got to work on the bed loft.

Hours later, we were all settled in and getting ready to go out for the night. We had found a few people throughout the day, and I was so excited. It was like a reunion every time I spotted someone I knew from last year…

“Josh, hey! How was your summer?” *Hug*

“Scott, I thought you weren’t coming this year, this is awesome! Where are you living?” *Hug*

“Nicole! Are you going to the party tonight? I heard ther will be lots of people there, maybe RJ will show up! I haven’t seen him since May!” *Hug*

And so, as I sit in this empty computer lab a hundred miles away from home, I reflect on the past two days I have been back at college.

Already went to the kickoff parties where I had to drag my drunk friends out as they giggled all the way back to the dorms. Already shopped at Target, Wal Mart, and the mall. Already hugged every person possible and caught up with as many people as I could. Already enjoyed the convenience of Taco Bell five minutes from campus. Already eyed the potential guys around… needless to say, I’m still looking…

They only thing I haven’t done these past few days is go to class…. 🙂 Don’t worry. They don’t start till tomorrow. That’s when things will really get busy!

And so this newly realized Sophomore will close the evening with a walk back to her dorm, a ride up an elevator, and an attempt to get used to opening her door with a key each time she comes and goes…..

I love this place.
