A Visit with Fred

Today, Diane {Fred’s daughter} and I walked in on some PT in the room. Fred was practicing lifting himself up a little bit using his hands on the side of a chair and pushing with his legs. It was interesting to watch and he was pleased with himself because three days ago he couldn’t do it at all. The young man who was helping and instructing him gave him a good tip that I can use too. He said, "As you are doing this stuff, count aloud." I can see the value of this because I have a tendency to hold my breath and, apparently, so did Fred. When one is counting aloud, breathing is automatic!

Fred now has a room mate who was moved in today. Diane and I were asked to wait outside while the new man was settled in and when we came back in, Fred was asleep. So, we scooted off to eat at an Italian restaurant where Diane had spaghetti and meatballs and I had a tuna salad with French fries. Not very Italian but good!

breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun.

That’s wonderful progress that Fred has made! I need to remember the thing about counting aloud — I hold my breath too, and should not do that!

Great to hear the progress he’s making! That’s a good tip – the counting aloud one – I always hold my breath too in situations like that.
