Mostly Art Ideas

  • I tried something new today, and that was using colored Sharpies to draw on an acrylic background. I am moderately pleased with the result. Yes, I AM going to take photographs. I have even gone so far as to plug my camera battery in for charging. I am also slowly moving towards putting my new paintings up on our walls. I attribute all this art stuff I am doing to the SAD light. As I have said previously, it doesn’t give me lots of energy but there is no doubt that I am feeling much more normal than I was.
  • Last year I got myself a subscription to Cloth Paper Scissors, a six-times-a-year magazine for collage artists. I have been enjoying it but decided to not renew because it is expensive, I think, at $35 a year. So, today I got the March/April edition and it is FULL of fascinating, helpful stuff I am getting ideas from! For example, I already have a cheap pair of unworn canvas shoes I had plans to decorate and there is an article in the magazine about this! Of course, the shoes the artists decorated are high heels, which are things I will NEVER wear again, but the ideas can be transferred to my canvas shoes, and as I am writing this, it occurs to me that I have some slightly grubby and well-worn walking shoes that could be given a whole new life…  My sister had this rule about magazines which said she would buy one {she seldom subscribed} if she could find three articles in the table of contents that interested her!  Certainly this edition has got one article I am very interested in. I think I may subscribe for another year if only for the lovely pictures!
  • I didn’t go to chorus practice {again!} yesterday because our drive is a sheet of ice! I called carol to ask if she was going and she told me she had a nasty cold. I was going to ask her if she could pull into the drive right behind my car since I felt fairly safe penguin-walking along holding on to my car! I will be SO glad when spring really gets here…

I am grateful for:

  1.  the SAD light and that I am feeling so much more like myself again
  2. the new edition of Cloth Paper Scissors {March/April} which is giving me so many ideas

I really want to see your art using markers! I just bought a set of BIC permanent markers which I thought would be good for home crafted greeting cards – nothing fancy, just for family birthdays. That won’t work out since the ink goes right through paper. Now I have to think of a project. So, I will be interested in yours! The magazine sounds interesting, but yes, pricey. Well, depending on how many issues that includes. Of course, that’s a magazine that you’d keep for future reference.

Oops, you did say 6 issues. Sorry.

I love how enthusiastic you are about stuff now with that light!

I have not made a collage since junior high school art class. I think I will make another one! I would have so much more freedom to use different materials now; it sounds like fun! And I look forward to seeing yours. That’s a shame you had to miss chorus because of the ice, but I don’t blame you. I can’t walk on ice either. I used to just dread having to do it, when I worked at a school and had to navigate across an icy parking lot each morning. It’s one thing if you have something to hold onto, but when you don’t have ANYthing nearby to grab hold of….I think it’s just plain treacherous and scary! hugs, Nicky

I LOVE Cloth Paper Scissors, but I think it’s overly expensive too! I got several back issues on eBay once… Three or four magazines in a lot for maybe $10…

they have the mag online, with all kinds of bonuses at their site! Hope you can enjoy this and I think they have individual issues for sale if you wanted a hard copy. I have a friend in KS whose son is doing collages now. Be well; peace…dan

It’s great when you find things to buoy you up isn’t it! Your sister was a wise woman – too many times I used to buy magazines and discover very little of value in them once I opened them. Eventually I decided to confine my magazine reading to doctors and dentists waiting rooms which is one reason I never mind being kept waiting for appointments lol! However now when the Writing mags pop through the door it’s the exact opposite – I find there’s almost too much and I become overwhelmed with them ……. never happy am I!

The gray winters of Western New York were a major reason for me moving south. I can feel the “blues” creeping on when we have a few consecutive days of gray here. We are working on three days of gray skies now…. Glad the light helps… I can hear my great aunts saying how they would turn on all the lights and would feel better… that is going back 40+ years now…
