Yea for Amazon!

This morning, I took my Kindle out into the sunshine and tested it. I flipped a couple of pages and each time I did, the text got lighter and lighter until it was barely readable. Oops! I had a bad one.

So, in between going up and down stairs with laundry, I called Amazon Kindle help. There is a part of the help section where one gets a choice of sending an email or requesting a phone call. I had never used the requesting a phone call before but I thought, "Well, I’ve got nothing else to do so I can sit here and wait for Amazon to call me!" I put in my phone number, clicked and literally seconds later, a Kindle help desk person called me! Seconds!

He walked me through an Alt G resetting of the page, but, as I told him, I had tried that. Yes, it did make the text darker but the fading continued as I flipped pages. I supposed I could have done the alt G thing after every page but who wants to do that! Then he had me return the Kindle manually to factory setting which meant everything I had on there disappeared except the dictionary and the Kindle 2 guide. {They hadn’t disappeared for good; they had been archived back at Amazon.} I took the phone and the Kindle and went out into the sun again and tried flipping pages on the Kindle guide. But, alas, the problem was still there.

So, TOMORROW I will have a new Kindle.  Today I will get an email directing me to a  link for a prepaid label I can print out. I have 30 days to return the defective Kindle. If I don’t return it within that time frame, I will be charged for it. None of this is news to me since I had to return the scratched DVDs of Season 4 of House MD. And he finished up by saying "You can still read on the Kindle you have until the new one arrives but I would suggest you do it indoors!" And when the new one DOES arrive, I will take it out and try it in the sunshine immediately!

Very nice! I had a similar customer service situation, where I was e-mailed back the day I placed an inquiry, and when the problem was remedied (within the week) I was also e-mailed. Different company, but it seems so rare to get such quick, personal service! *HUGS*

Amazon is super good about things like this.

Wow, between the defective Kindle and the House DVDs, I’m starting to think you have bad luck with receiving defective merchandise.

THat’s awesome!

Isn’t Amazon lovely. I like their feature that tells me if I’ve already ordered a book, under another title. This is happening as books by a favorite author (deceased) are re-published under new names. They’re good about finding things no-longer-published, too. A few old favorites are disintigrating and need replacement. Your Kindle must be nice, but, having grown up in a newspaper, I still need the smell of the ink and paper.

sounds like amazon has great customer service. take care,

The same thing happened when my Kindle developed a display problem. I have to commend them for handling the situation so well.

That’s pretty impressive – nice to hear there’s still some good customer service going around!

so it still works indoors just fine but in the sun it fades? weird!

Nice customer service.

That’s OUTSTANDING service, I must say. Interesting that it would fade in sunlight, but I’ve noticed that one of my electronic toys (I forget which one) did the same thing.

I’ve heard a lot about the Kindle, both good and bad. I hope that your new one works correctly. 🙂 Eric

Wow! Great service! That’s very rare these days, as far as I’ve experienced!
