Day Four
Since I am an alien, I can’t vote. Yes, I have been in this country since 1963 which is 45 years and also 15 years longer longer than I have lived in England — and I am still a green-card person. Whenever I say or write this, I always say I will get up and get the citizenship thing done, but I don’t do it. I think it is mostly because I don’t feel that one person can make a difference. That, and the deep conviction I have that all –no, let me emphasize that– ALL– politicians are basically crooks and in it for what they can get out of it. Barak Obama might be the exception but if he becomes president, I will not be surprised to read that he is a sleazy crook, too. As I write this, I am actually surprised to realize how strongly I feel this. It surprises me because as long-term readers know, I am an optimist. Hmmm, maybe I should rethink this. Common sense tells me it can’t be true for all politicans.
Now, a total change of subject. Yesterday I walked on the treadmill for 15 minutes in the morning and had every intention of doing the same in the afternoon. I was also going up and down ten badly-lit stairs, {which DO have a rail on one side} doing laundry. {You can see where this is going, right?} And on my penultimate trip downstairs, and only because I was not paying attention, I fell. I somehow missed the last step and came crashing down onto the floor. I fell on my left hip–the metal one–and it feels a tiny bit sore this morning but there is no sign of a bruise as yet. The worst part was the shock of suddenly finding myself falling and the fact that it knocked all the breath out of me. I picked myself up eventually and checked on the load of permanent press clothes in the drier and reset it for 30 more minutes. After I got upstairs I sat and read for a while and eventually told myself I HAD to go and get the clothes and bring them upstairs and put them away. So, I did. but I didn’t walk, or do anything else for the rest of the afternoon. But although I had a bad night, which was caused largely by the nap I took after lunch yesterday, I feel physically well today with just a slight twinge in the hip area.
So, I will walk on the treadmill for 15 minutes this morning. Yesterday I experimented a bit by putting the treadmill up one incline level for two minutes. I found it difficult but I suceeded in doing it. I may try that again. The more I use this treadmill, the more I like it. Yesterday I discovered {accidentally} that I can lengthen or shorten the set time period on the fly. Of course, if I had read the directions carefully, I would not have found this serendipitously, and I am all for serendipitiy!
Ok, time to get my bagel and coffee.
QUOTATIONS:
"There is only one success – to be able to spend your life in your own way."
Christopher Darlington Morley (1890-1957)
Yes they’re all crooks. You should get your citizenship though.

I don’t think Obama will turn out to be a sleazy crook. He is a great politician, though, and that means abilities in compromise and consensus making. Sometimes people see compromise as a bad thing.
Warning Comment
I am not quite that cynical yet. I do think that there can be quality politicians because they are humans. Because humans aren’t perfect, there will never be the perfect candidate, but there can be one that strives to reach ideals and give hope to a country that is lacking hope.

I don’t think they’re all crooks. I think they are politicians. They play the game. Some more ruthlessly than others, and some more honestly than others. It’s the good-old-boys network. What worries me is that Obama has played the game with amazing skill, dexterity and intelligence. He knows what to say and to whom. I’m not sure I trust him fully, but thank goodness this isn’t a dictatorship.
Warning Comment
i don’t know if obama is a crook, but he certainly isn’t trustworthy, IMHO. His past associations beg lots of questions. He speaks in platitudes, which really doesn’t say anything. He has charisma, but we all know it takes more than that to lead a nation. Basically, his experience is less than stellar, and i don’t trust him to keep us safe.

It’s always a surprise when the body betrays one. I wonder what’s to be after this election – I think there’ll be various surprises.
Warning Comment
I’m a bit cynical about it all too. I often think that maybe when they start in politics they have good morals, honesty and all those good leadership qualities, then over time things happen that corrupt even the best. But Obama looks like the best from a bad bunch, so far. 😉
Warning Comment
ps: my friend did the citizenship thing. He did say it was a tad strange having to renounce his own country during the oath. 😉
Warning Comment
Hmm, I’m the opposite – I tend to take my starting point as being that most politicians mean well. Not that I think they all do well, of course, just that their intentions are often good. 🙂

I always forget that you’re not a citizen here! It’s such an interesting tidbit. You’re the only person I know well in my personal life that lives here but is from another country and whatnot.

Joey didn’t register to vote because he also feels that one person cannot make a difference…not in something as big as a national election. He does have lots of political opinions, though! If I came from England, I do not think I would want to give up my British citizenship to become a citizen of some other country. I LOVED living in England! :o) !! hugs, Weesprite

I hope you get feeling better soon — I tend to get very unsettled when I fall these days, mostly because instead of bouncing, I tend to break things and bruise very badly. I do understand about the politicans and not voting — but I think it’s important to vote for my local government, and tend to write them loud letters when they screw up. I know it’s probably a waste of time and won’t make a difference, but at least I tried.
Warning Comment
Please be careful. My husband’s aunt and stepfather died after their falls this year.

I’m so glad you’re ok. Falls are the pits. And yes, they’re all crooks. I always end up voting for the lesser of 2 evils, but find myself wishing that there were NO evils. What can I say? Love you! ~M

Hi teacher, we do not elect our president here. The electoral college does on the 15th of Dec. How we vote doesn’t have anything to do with how they vote. They aren’t bound by our votes at all. They are behind closed doors and can vote however they want although they have followed the popular vote they have no mandate to do so by most all state or federal charters. be well…dan

Oh my goodness, you fell. That is scarey. You could have been hurt. I am glad to hear you didn’t though. My mom’s neighbor just fell at 2 a.m. The people that deliver lunch came and she didn’t answer the door. That was at noon. She laid there for 10 hours until someone noticed. What if it would have been longer? Poor lady. She is in her upper 80’s and lives alone. So sad. Glad your ok.
Warning Comment
Sorry to hear about your fall. Keeping my fingers crossed for Obama.

that fall must have been scary… I don’t think Obama is a crook… I hope I’m right in my intuition!
