Quiet

We have had company over the weekend, Fred’s twin daughters and their husbands and one seventeen-year-old boy were all visiting us. The daughters and their families and I went out to eat in Burlington Last night. {Fred chose to stay home since he wasn’t having a particularly good day.} The meal was at a restaurant I had never been to before and was quite pleasant. The food was expensive but good and we were outside where we could see a bit of Lake Champlain and feel a lovely breeze.

It was nice to see them all and it is nice that they have all left now! I honestly can’t take  more than one or two people at a time and by the time they were ready to leave, I was stressed out by the noise. I went to bed early and slept ten hours which is a LOT for someone who usually does quite well on six or seven hours!

We are enjoying our home-grown tomatoes. I have picked almost all of them and they are sitting on the rail of the deck ripening. Today I took the ripest one, washed it, and put it in the cheese-and-tomato sandwich I had for lunch. Fred made himself a tomato sandwich last night while we were all out eating. My older son’s first wife used to refer to summer as the time of  "the tomato sandwich diet!" A few years ago, Fred would buy tomatoes in the winter but basically, they had no taste and were just there to make a salad look pretty. But we have found, especially this year, that the tomatoes we buy in the off-season taste MUCH better than they used to. I have no idea why, but we both noticed that the winter tomatoes tasted almost as good as the home-grown ones!

When I went to the book club meeting, my friends were asking me if I was still walking and I had to confess that I wasn’t. "Oh, that’s a shame," they said. "You were doing so well." Yes, I was and although walking is more difficult, I have resolved to start back. It is going to take a bit of self-discipine because I would much rather sit out on the deck and read the Kindle, but walking is good for my body and helps how I feel. This morning I walked up to the drug store to pick up prescriptions. I will take a short walk this afternoon, too. That is how I worked up to doing so well in the past– a small amount of walking twice a day.

It feels like autumn here today. I was sitting out reading and came in because I was chilled!

“Quiet”….the most beautiful word in the world, some days! :o) !! I don’t like it when people comment “what a shame” about something we either are, or are not doing…..especially if we are perfectly happy with our current state-of-being! You’re enjoying the summer spent sitting on your porch reading so immensely….that nothing is a shame about it at all, really! :o) !! hugs, Weesprite

I’m sorry to hear that Fred wasn’t having a good today and hope that he is feeling better. I absolutely LOVE tomatoe sandwiches. Yum. Good for you going out for a meal when I can imagine that peace and quiet would have been preferable.

I’m the same way with company… after a couple days I start to get worn out with it. My grandmother used to say, “Company, like fish, starts to stink after a couple days.” 🙂

I only buy tomatoes with the vine still on. That makes a huge difference in taste to me. Not sure why that is. I hope Fred is feeling better!

I’m the same way with crowds. I’d much rather have just one or two people around. Interesting about the store-bough tomatoes. I don’t buy them even when they are in season because around here, they are always green and crunchy inside. I imagine the ones that come with the vine still attached are probably better, but I’m not about to pay that much money for a silly tomato!!!

One of the things I love about The Shore is the great commercial tomatoes. Several tomato packing plants are in the area and it is common to have a tenant hand me castoffs by the bagful (which I redistribute of course).

I do know what you mean about walking! If I don’t get my numbers in every day, I feel very lethargic the next, and it starts to spiral from there. So I try and get myself moving every day, even though it hurts.

Some of the hothouse ones and the tomatoes on the vine Mr. T and I use to call almost tomatoes.

Tomato sandwiches are my favorite meal these days – open-faced on toasted sourdough bread with mayo. And you know what? Sitting on the patio reading is my favorite activity, too. Without guilt! We are cooped up inside for so many winter months.
