Trackball Problems {Solved!}

EDIT: So, I was fiddling around doing this and that and for some reason, I pressed the CTRL key as I clicked the right button on the trackball… and…

the menu came up and at the top of it was BACK! Problem solved! {and if this makes no sense, read the rest of the entry…} Hmmm, also works with the option/Alt button AND the command button!

Ok, so this is irritating me no end. Let me explain.

I am not a mouse person. I am a trackball person. So, as I was setting up this IMac, I put the "mighty mouse" {no, I am not joking–that is what it is called} aside after a little fiddle around with it that only confirmed my essential non-mousiness and connected my trusty trackball. A nice red ball under my thumb,  right and left click buttons and a scroll thingy in the middle. And the right click took me back to the previous page, very convenient for reading OD because after I had read, I was back at the favorites page.

So then I decided that if this quite ordinary-looking mouse was called mighty, perhaps I should learn to use it, and so I connected it. Then I played around with it for a while. I really DO like the tiny little nubble in the center which allows one to zoom madly around the page but as for the rest of it… And what’s with those panels at the side that when squeezed, send all the open windows shooting outwards so they can all be seen? Hmmm, well, that could be useful. Then I went to system preferences and found some other things I could set which were ok, but they didn’t set me dancing in the streets!  So, I decided to go back to my trusty trackball.

Uh-oh!

Yes, it worked BUT I have lost the right-click-goes-back-one-page-ability! Instead, I get a little box popping up with the icons of all the programs that are open. Well, I can click on them but so far, I can’t see what that does. It doesn’t open them because they are already open so what use is it? I CAN go back to previous page by clicking on delete on the keyboard but I keep forgetting and right-clicking…. {insert deep sigh here}

Any Mac people out there who can tell me how to get the trackball working as it was? I have fiddled around in the preferences but no luck…

Glad you have figured it out! And remembered how you did it. If I ever solve a tech issue, I never seem to remember what I’ve done.

I use to a track ball when I had a mac. I’m glad you got it working. They are much nicer than a mouse.

I’m glad this got figured out! I had a trackball too, but it was too difficult in my brain to figure out how to use the regular mouse at work and the trackball at home. But they are much better for your wrist.

I am a Trackball person too. It seems we are one of the few. I do have a cordless optical mouse, but for Gaming the Trackball works best

my dh said under system preferences, you will find a control panel for the trackball, which will allow you to choose the function of the buttons….not a mac person, just married to one.

I don’t like trackballs….so I guess that makes me a mouse person! One time my menu disappeared from the top of my screen, and it bugged the hell outa me. I went through so many contortions to get it back, that by the time I finally DID make it reappear….I couldn’t remember what it was I had done, to bring this about! hugs, Weesprite

I’m a track ball person too. Ordinary mouses (mice ?) drive me nuts.

I love trackballs. SO much easier to use and maintain.
