A Short Sleep & Computer Problems
Yesterday I started going to bed at 11-ish. This is more or less my usual time. I ACTUALLY got to sleep at 5:15 this morning! I think I have mentioned that my desktop computer behaves badly if/when it is turned off? Well, we had an electrical blip of some kind yesterday and my stupid computer would NOT start up again. And to add to the annoyance, the monitor had a problem and started clicking off. Anyway, it was how to solve this problem that was keeping me awake last night. Oh, and the Kindle in which I was reading one of Ian Rankin’s Inspector Rebus stories!
So, at 5:15 I go back to bed again and sleep until 9:30 am. Fred got up around that time, too and we drank two pots of coffee. We have company coming tomorrow afternoon and I got a bit of the cleaning done. It shouldn’t take me too long to whisk around and tidy up tomorrow.
And I called our very good local computer repair shop which is one street over from us and told them about my computer. They charge $85 an hour to come to the house, but appalling as that is, I decided I didn’t want to take the computer over to them. I moved my sometimes-working-sometimes-not VERY heavy monitor into the bottom of the closet in our bedroom and got out Fred’s old monitor and plugged it in.That is how I discovered that even when I went into safe mode and closed the computer down properly, Windows would not let me boot up in anything but safe mode! Of course, it IS Windows 98 and I have had that computer seven years… I talked to the computer phone guy and said I would like to discuss an upgrade. No way do I want Vista but I have worked with XP a bit and quite like it… Anyway, I am considering a totally new computer. These guys coming in actually built my computer seven years ago. I think I need to do some research into what I want—fast, fast, fast and lots of memory!} and see what they would charge compared to what I could buy over the counter…
If I am going for a new computer, I want a flat screen this time…
Hmmm, maybe I should look into a Mac. I love my little Mac Book laptop…

I don’t think you can even buy those heavy CRT monitors any more. The flat screen panel things are quite reasonably priced these days and, of course, they don’t weigh a ton and a half. The only thing I don’t like about them is that, like the monitors on the laptop computers, you have to be sitting in a certain place (or have them tilted a certain way) to see them properly. I had XP Home and neverhad a lick of problems with it. I haven’t had any problems that I know of with Vista on my laptop, either. I think the people with the problems are the ones with the upgrades, not the full version already installed. Or maybe I’ve just been lucky.

I use Windows Vista and I’ve never had any trouble at all. I know that some people have though. I have a flat screen and I love it. Good luck! (((Hugs)))

We’re going through the same problem with our old monster of a tv; do we get it fixed, or just say to hell with it and get a new one? I don’t know what I would do if our computers go on the fritz — have you checked your power strips lately?

I got a Dell Laptop at Walmarat..Inspiron 1521. It’s got Vista. I LOVE it. It’s wireless, too, so I can use it most anywhere. I don’t remember how much it costs now, but I bought it only about 3-4 months ago. It was maybe around $600-$700. It doesn’t come with all the stuff on it, so it’s cheaper. I think it had some version of Microsoft Works. I like MS Office, so I got that. i guess by the time I got all that, it did cost more..but that’s a personal choice. Maybe get something as plain as possible & just load the software you will use. Good luck. OH..and for my desktop..I got tired of the glunky monitor..spent less than $200 on a thin nice big monitor. I can’t remember any prices right now, I just know whatever I spent, I thought it was reasonable & certainly worth it. My desktop is XP. I have had no problems with XP or Vista (laptop).

You gave me good advice when I bought my Windows XP laptop and I have been quite happy with it. Have Vista at the office and HATE IT. I refuse to deal with it. I will wait for whatever comes after Vista to upgrade.

My husband swears by Lenox (I think that’s how it’s spelled) but I’ve never used it. Of course this computer is WAY too old to support it! LOL!

Computers will drive you crazy….I have heard too many horror stories about Vista. I’m still on XP. My system is going on 6 years old now. I updated the memory so it is at the max. Unfortunately it seems to be freezing up more and more on certain functions….I could never make sense of Macintosh….
