Working on the Balcony Boxes

This morning started off very strangely. But first, I have to say that I am delighted that I am back up to my previous level of energy in the mornings. It doesn’t last as long as it used to — now I bottom-out about noon instead of 4 pm—but I figure that will come in time. Anyway, this morning I woke up, brain in full gear, at 4 am. Now, that was something I hadn’t planned. I got up and read email and OD and other stuff thinking that in about an hour or so, I would be sleepy again and go back to bed. However, next time I looked at the clock, it was almost 7 am which is the time I usually get up. But I was sleepy then, so I went back to bed and slept until the phone rang at about 8:30 when I got up. So, I am already starting my day an hour and a half later than usual. I am SUCH a creature of habit that this confuses me!

In a short while, I am heading out to buy more flowers. I have two more boxes and at least one hanging basket to fill. I am still wanting to get a topsy-turvy basket to grow tomatoes. The garden shop said they would call me when these came in but I am half inclined to let it go, buy a BIG pot and put my tomatoes in that. Our landlord, Bryce, did that last year and he got a pretty good crop of tomatoes from it. If I don’t hear anything from the garden shop by this weekend, I will go out on Monday and get the big pot. On the subject of gardening, I think I am going to have to buy gardening gloves. I love to have my hands in soil but I HATE to have dirty fingernails! I did the first two boxes with bare hands and spent an inordinate amount of time digging under my {short} fingernails for the rest of the day!

The sky  is overcast with a strong chance of rain. At 6 am, I looked out of the back door and noticed it was showery so I went out in slippers and robe and brought in the new chair pads. They are water resistant but I know that one of them soaked up a puddle of water a few days ago! Anyway, although I won’t be constantly running in and out to do this, it DID stop the rain this morning! And I notice the sun is out!

What I am reading: I am still reading what I was reading yesterday so if you missed it and want to know, go back <—- this way, OK?

I’m feeling very disappointed that my tomato plants are not sprouting. I think the soil I planted them in was not enriched enough.

I’ve figured out that the best way to clean under my fingernails is to wash my hair. I dig out the big stuff, and a good hair-scrubbing gets out the rest. It’s a good thing my hair needed washing yesterday!

You are brave to work with teens! Seriously, that can be a very tough group to work with. They feel they are grown-up enough to tell us where we are wrong and where to stick it if we don’t agree! Just kidding! I know they aren’t all like that, most are just respectfully honest in their opinions. I feel it is fine to allow them their voices; As long as they don’t abuse the chance to be heard. So, hi!

Working in the dirt is so therapeutic. My tomato plants are not doing much. Been in the ground about four weeks now… I want green tomatoes to fry up NOW!!! Hope it warms up soon for you..

homegrown tomatoes… how I wished I had a green thumb….

I always buy my flowers the first weekend in June. Otherwise I worry about them when I’m camping for 5 days over Memorial Day weekend. Nothing like spending $50 on annuals only to have them die from lack of water!

RYN: I certainly don’t mean to harangue anyone. If I harangue anyone at it all it is those specifically who say to me that it isn’t important to them. Be that as it may, it will be important to them, and they will most likely be the first to complain when they lose their social welfare programs and when taxes are raised and prices go up and they can’t even afford the basic necessities. I was under the understanding that you were still a citizen of the UK, though I certainly could be incorrect in that, and definitely wasn’t addressing my concerns to you though I do appreciate your input.

If you drag your nails over a bar of soap before you do your gardening, everything will wash right off when you’re done. Will there be pictures when you’re finished? Please? Love to you! ~M

I always just buy the cheap surgical gloves so I can still feel the soil. They just throw them out after I am done.

The planter boxes and glorious front-door porch (at the back of the building) is possibly the only thing I miss from our shoe-box of an apartment. I’m looking forward to planting season, even if I won’t be able to take much advantage of it.

Thanks for the note. I have several VERY large pots of flowers to take along to the new place. The problem is that, in the summer, that gravel will be above 120 degrees and cook the plants. Oh how I love Texas. 🙂

Can’t wait to see your windowboxes in a picture (or perhaps a pastel?). The weather has been strange here, black omnious clouds with cold wind and rain with sometimes sun. Gloomy as hell.
