Watching Birds and Making Yogurt

This morning I decided to get the yogurt maker out and make some yogurt. The maker hold seven pots but I only make six because if I make seven, I have to open another packet of the stuff I put in it and add a bit extra. So, I measured six pots of milk and stood over it while it boiled. This isn’t a big chore because I can look out of the kitchen door window and watch the birds. We have three black-capped chickadees which dart in, grab a mouthful and swoop off again. Last year, I couldn’t tell how many there were because I never saw them all at once, but this year they perch on the dead sunflower stalks in Bryce’s little garden. I saw them all this morning and watched them dash across the yard to eat.

We have a packet of corn that Fred used to make corn chowder but he didn’t like how it turned out so he said it was fine if I put some out for the squirrels. There was one up on the rail eating this morning. They can’t get into the bird feeders at all so they are happy finding this corn. This morning there was also a raucous blue jay at the corn. The big feeder has a perch that drops down when squirrels or big birds get on it and covers up the feeding holes. The smaller feeder has a mesh round it that sparrows, chickadees and finches can get through but that keeps out squirrels and jays.

After the milk had reached a boiling point and then cooled, It was time to mix up the good bacteria and put the mixture in the milk. I did this and then started pouring the milk into the pots. That was when I knocked over a filled pot and half the milk ran into the front left burner of the electric stove. It was a HUGE mess.. I pulled out the element and wiped it off and then had to mop up the milk which had run into all the corners of the stove. I took off the aluminum foil on the pan under the element and put on a new piece and then had to wiggle and push to get the element back properly. And finally, I told Fred so that if he uses that burner tonight and it smokes and stinks, he will know that there was milk I didn’t get cleaned up!

Until later…

I’ve never made yogurt, but I’ve made huge messes on the stove. What an ordeal!

Mess aside, homemade yogurt is the best! Be well,

J has one of those glass top ranges, and I have to say that in terms of keeping it clean, it is so much easier than the old sort. I can only imagine the mess — what an annoyance!

If I were Fred I’d be nervous about using that burner. I know it wasn’t fun to have to clean that up. The yogurt that is left will be so good, though. I can almost see the birds the way you describe it. What fun!

Oh, those messes are the WORST! I had some juncos this morning at the feeder, but the snow was too deep for them to get anything. So I went out and cleaned the snow off and filled the feeder, and they never came back! Darn! I think they’re kind of pretty.

I didn’t know you could make yogurt homemade…interesting. Does it taste the same?

Just let me spill my stuff at the beginning. Not when most of the effort has be made. Then I am happy. The later in the operation the more miserable I become. So, if I just keep the process long enough I guess I will alway be happy. have fun…dan

ew, I hate it when messes happen when I’m cooking! I think when we cook, our reward for being so industrious should be that everything goes easy and right for us! :o) !! hugs, Weesprite

My birds were so busy today. I love watching them. Flying in and out of the feeder. They only seem to choose one of the feeders and then they move to another while the third is still full. I have a feeling by the time I get home tomorrow I will have to fill the one feeder. They are fun to watch though.

oh boy, that’s a mess. I’ve done this with coffee (which had creamer in it) and when Rich turned on the burner it smoked setting off the smoke alarm. At least we knew that the alarm worked I guess.

*huggs*

I hate when I spill things on the stove and runs down into the element. All that work down the drain! At least you got to watch the birds and squirrels! =)

I used to have a yoghurt maker, but I don’t know what happened to it. It’s very entertaining watching the birds!
